If you were going to scoop ice cream out of a bowl, would you do it with the back of a spoon? Yes it's backwards. You've been told this numerous times in every different way by multiple people, and even provided pictures explaining to you exactly WHY it is backwards.

Also, good job on the photo. Glad you finally got rid of that potato you were using earlier.

I really thought that I explained it thoroughly.  Given the reference photos of correct installations (rivets toward the engine) vs. the Tony installation (rivets toward the radiator), the written requests for photos and when combined with the 'inside-out' clothing analogy, well, it should be understood.

I can't really do more, and at the risk of sounding like a jerk, I will encourage everyone to totally ignore Tony and his requests for help.  Every time he asks a question, he gets good information and chooses to ignore the information and advice given, becomes confrontational, finds his own 'better way' by the way of soda bottles, tape, snake oil and moped parts.  So, my feelings - to h*ll with him, let him learn how to research his own solutions and learn the hard way.  We've been through it all before - electronic ignition/points/123/Jeremy's one-size-fits-all/irridium plugs/plug leads ad libitum/clutch throw-out bearing/WD40/clutch return spring from the back porch screen door/rod change soda bottle upgrade etc/throttle cable/oil filter anti-drain valve  construction (btw, Fram makes Unipart)/using screws instead of clevis pins, and so on...  The list goes on and on, and it's pointless.  Won't join the local clubs, won't read a tech article, won't listen, accuses and ridicules.  Really pathetic.

I feel sorry for the poor sap who buys this entropic mini after Tony's finished butchering it and can't get it to perform properly.

Let's face it - game over.

"....whether it turns clockwise or counterclockwise"

Well it turns BOTH ways depending on where you are standing looking at it! The only way to get the fan to blow (or suck?) inwards is to make the engine turn backwards, which is beyond the scope of this forum!  But you'll see, it works MUCH better with your "wing" providing "lift" OUTWARD!

Dave,
I don't believe that Robster/velocity has ever said that his Mini overheats....
I think he's worried about what will happen when things get a bit warmer. Somewhat like the kid that can't sleep because he's afraid of the monster under the bed.

He could worry a lot less if he would turn his fan the right way around. And, no, we're not referencing whether it turns clockwise or counterclockwise.

Yeah, I really should know better - how many times have I asked or given images for you to take a second look at your fan?  Let me guess, you've never been to the articles pages that our host provides.  Yes, correct fan installation is described there...  I believe it's in Calver's Corner.  Yes, Calver can teach a few things.  I suggest you check these resources out.  They're FREE!

Ok, Tony, check it out:  All of these images represent the wearing of clothes.  As you can see, even though they're applied correctly, the installation is wrong.  Think of your fan as being inside out.  Look at the pictures I posted and compare to your own.  The riveted side is toward the engine and the 'cup' of the blade faces the radiator.  If you bolted two tongue depressors to the pulley, they'd still spin in the same direction.

I did congratulate you on attatching it to the pulley.  Once you've turned it around to function properly, you may find that you require a small purpose-built factory spacer between the pulley and the fan.  These come in 2 thicknesses, depending upon what's required.  I suggest that you obtain one or the other if you are currently lacking one.  I'll not spoon-feed the part numbers to you, heck - you're the bright one, éh Jethro?

Even though the engineers that designed certain components can't compare to your duct tape, clothespin and bailing wire solutions, they will work together in symphony when applied and installed correctly; whether you believe it or not.  Doing things correctly will ultimately save you money, effort, disappointment, heartache, ridicule and scorn.  Don't cry that nobody's helping you when you're too (.....) to read what's been given you.  You've got some attitude ...

Also, just for the record, I never said the engine rotated counter clockwise, and I do my own wrenching.  I've only owned one mini though.  When I feel the need for something different, I change the car into what suits my mood.

Leopards can't change their spots.

Your fan IS on backwards!!   Actually they will blow OUT to the tire no matter which way you install it.... BUT it will blow MUCH MORE if you get the airfoil working properly!   Think of an airplane wing.... you are now flying upside down!!

I'd like to see you trying a little harder NOT to get up in arms about things... You now have a bit of a reputation for saying things a little oddly, and justifiably for what I call "answer shopping".... if you don't like someone's answer or suggestion, you ignore it and keep looking for the answer you want!  Unfortunately that is called "wishful thinking" and is irritating to those who try to help!

So, you're happy with the way your fan is working then.

Good for you; great to see all of that thinking outside the traditional box.

BTW - Just like on Sesame Street, one of these things is not like the others.

So, how's that Arizona heat treating your cooling system?  Do you think it might be time to check that your fan is pushing air through the radiator towards the tire?

Just do some research - for example, MMO, LOS, CIM, MMSPW, WCAIK, SHL, BTFF, and when all that is done, a straight downtube, a larger intercooler, and an RMW dyno tune should make any 998 sing.

You just need to think differently. That said, always remember that fast cars wears faster, classic minis are for display only ,because it has a very cute and attractive appearance. I mean i dont want to risk myself driving it 200miles away.?!! But i do wish drive it on weekends just around town and show people hey i have a cute little car,  or everyday quick erands and groceries.

For me, im happy with a smooth running, quiet mini , good in gas, with lots of power going uphill.  thats my ideal mini.  Speed? not my tempo.

im happy to know that someone is keeping records of what im saying, a clear proof that he is learning from it, it's very flattering. honestly im not angry, im overwhelmed with inner joy.  nice to know i have a fan here in MM.

thank you dave!

You are welcome LOL...

But seriously... are you overheating at idle, cruising at 50, flogging the last breath out of your 1098 at 90, or after you coast down? I've never had an issue keeping any small-bore cool, so this should be a simple fix when armed with all the information.
