The restrictive factory air filter and air intake housing are replaced by the K&N Typhoon air intake which is designed to dramatically reduce air flow restriction as it smoothes and straightens air flow. This allows your engine to inhale a larger amount of air than the factory air intake. More air means more usable power and acceleration throughout the engine’s RPM range. In addition to more power, this air intake system improves engine sound with more aggressive and deeper acoustics during acceleration.
Included is a black rubber topped K&N high-flow air filter and a heat shield that installs into the original air box space. Air is directed through the intake tube into the engine’s turbo inlet for a guaranteed power gain. The intake tube has an attractive black powder-coated finish that's made to last and it accommodates the factory mass air sensor. The oversized cone shaped air filter can be used for up to 100,000 miles before servicing is needed depending on driving conditions. This air intake is relatively easy to install usually in 90 minutes or less using existing factory mounting points. The tools needed are a screwdriver, ratchet set and an Allen wrench.
Dyno result: 2015 Mini Cooper 1.5L - 6.55hp @ 3200rpm and 11.05lb-ft @ 3200 rpm (Horsepower gains based on specific or similar vehicle dynamometer test. Results will vary.)
The K&N Solution for your 3rd Generation MINI
This Intake Kit is an easy to install performance upgrade and comes with all the hardware necessary for installation. A mandrel-bent aluminum air intake tube replaces a portion of the factory turbo inlet pipe to help streamline airflow into the turbocharger. This tube incorporates a mounting location for the factory mass airflow sensor and is finished in a durable flat black powder coat.
Attached to the new K&N air intake tube is K&N conical performance air filter. This filter is designed to help minimize restriction in the airflow pathway while the oiled cotton gauze filtration media provides superior engine protection. Another benefit of this K&N air filter’s design is that it’s washable and reusable and can go up to 100,000 miles between cleanings, depending on driving conditions. The filter is shrouded by an application specific heat shield, and reuses the factory fresh air ducting to help provide cooler air from outside the engine bay.
Put all of these precision-engineered parts together and you have a recipe for increased performance. On the dyno a 2015 Mini Cooper 1.5 liter turbo produced an estimated additional 6.5 horsepower at 3200rpm and 11.0 pound-feet of torque at 3200rpm with this kit. For a small 1.5 liter engine, those are some impressive power gains. This kit installed on a stock 2016 JCW model produced an estimated additional 9.01 horsepower at 5400 rpm and 6.21 pound-feet of torque at 4350rpm!
K&N backs its air filters and air intake systems with a 10-year/million mile limited warranty and a Consumer Protection Pledge so Mini enthusiasts can feel confident that their automotive cultural icon is covered. The heart and soul of what began over 50 years ago with the Mini Cooper is alive and well today in the newest generation. Give your little piece of history a boost in performance with the K&N Typhoon performance air intake system.
NOTE: This product is NOT CARB approved. Always check your current local regulations on compliance for street use.
K&N Engineering, Inc., requires cleaning the intake system’s air filter element every 100,000 miles. When used in dusty or off-road environments, our filters will require cleaning more often. We recommend that you visually inspect your filter once every 25,000 miles to determine if the screen is still visible. When the screen is no longer visible some place on the filter element, it is time to clean it.
For care and maintenance of the filter in this kit, see K&N Filter Care Kit.
