Hi Brooke, can I get the last 7-digits of the vin number?  Playing music thru the usb may require an option from MINI to enable this feature.  I can check your vin number to see if it was included.  You can post the vin or email me at [email protected].

I don't have a new MINI or an i-phone so I'm not much help. Last (wild) guess is if you are streaming the music. maybe the phone isn't syncing correctly with bluetooth (another thing I don't use) or whatever it uses to get cell signal within the car. Or the cable isn't compatible??

Sorry,
it is a 2008 mini cooper s hatchback and the phone is an iPhone 6s.
The error message appears in the car and it is plugged into the usb port for the audio system.
The songs are just from apple music, so I assumed so as it is just streaming.

You might want to tell what make & model car you are plugging the phone into ( assuming it IS a vehicle.. you didn't actually say ).
The next questions:
 - Where is the error message appearing - phone or vehicle?
 - Is the USB port a communicating port built into the audio system, or a dumb recharging port?
 - Is the music file format compatible with the car's audio system?
