Yep this is what im taking about, the Saturn alternator... you need to but the proper bracket to fit the mini.  I dont think they have this kind of alternator across the pond
Wrong again !!!!  No you don't scooter boy. More garbage spewing from your mouth on a subject you know nothing about. All that has to be done mounting wise is to clock the alternator so the two mounting points align up using a factory Mini bracket.

Not sure why you think they do not have this across the pond or what that has to do with this thread, you do know they make GM cars in Europe don't you ?

I am replacing primarily because it sat in the Mini for 15 years in the NC weather. Really rough and corroded...Figured why not since I am doing a full rebuild on the it's 1275 anyhow..All I have is a Napa and an ORiellys here in Juneau Alaska not many options for used alternators here??.That's what I was looking for part numbers or brands I can outright purchase....K

I can buy 43 Amp Lucas alternators rebuilt by Bosch for $76.00 + $18 core charge from World-Pac They fit, they look proper and they will supply all you need in the way of current unless your running Rally Lamps for hours at a time and 1000 watt stereo's...........................

if you are planning to install few car appliances like stereo, equalizer, loud speakers, strobe light effects, loud horn, you must get the 100amp output alternator to compensate with the huge power draw from those appliances(so to speak). and get an Optima battery too.

I recently noticed that the later 70 amp units Rover fitted to minis is also on Perkins Diesel engines. The unit on my AC equipped 1997 SPI automatic is the same as is on a Cat Olympian XQ80 generator I am working on.

This means that if you live in a large enough city that people actually rebuild alternators, they will know how to rebuild these alternators.

I think that it makes sense to go with something like this than to re-purpose an alternator and file down the mounting tabs, fit a special pulley, etc.

Bill C. Often says he buys a unit for Ford tractors. I am starting to think this alternator is on a lot of different equipment.

How do you know you need to replace it in the near future ?

My experience with them is that they are a work/don't work item and give no obvious signs of failure.

That is electrically mind you - a screaming bearing would be a bit of a giveaway...

He did say "alternator" Doug...

Kev, IME th only real issue with the MM items is $$

For something generic like an alternator you're best served by dropping by your local MomnPop auto elec shoppe and see what they have on the shelf.  At PepBoys or AutoZone etc you might be best asking for a Sprite/MG item.. Minis seem to confuse them.

Depending on what you have (extra lights/stereo/etc) and where you are (wet cold, short trips with frequent use of the starter) you may want a unit with a greater output than standard....

Cheers, Ian

I believe the common Mini generator is the Lucas C40.  There are ones with "straight" cases and ones with steps on their rear end.  Most are rated for around 22 Amps.

Our host has a couple of articles in the tech section that will walk you through the changes to make when converting to an alternator.  You can as you suggest replace your Lucas generator with a Lucas alternator.  Apart from the wiring changes you will also want a rear mount alternator bracket.  It is a longer version of the generator bracket.

There is nothing wrong with the Lucas alternators sold by our host.  However, there are other options.  Google for alternator conversions.  Anything you can put on a Sprite or Midget will easily be installed on your Mini.  In most cases that also applies to anything you see installed on an MGB.

That was my plan but wasn't sure what a good replacement would be..It is internally regulated...So you're saying the 35 or 45 on mini mania would work per say..

Probably best not to bother....

Get a modern alternator that fits.  The main things to get the pulley lined up with the belt when the alt is bolted in place.  Many generic alts have a facility to customise this dimension.

Most (all??) modern alts are internally regulated so if you currently have an ancient one which uses an external regulator there may be a small amount of ew-wiring required... but its no big deal.

Cheers, Ian
