Unlike the simple 'valve cover' on past vehicles, the MINI valve cover does a lot more:

  • Sealing the top of the cylinder head from the outside
  • Sound insulation
  • Accommodation of crankcase breather outlet
  • Accommodation of oil separation system
  • Accommodation of pressure relief valve for crankshaft ventint system
  • Attachment of sensors
  • Shielding of outside from electromagnetic waves produced by the ignition coils (electromagnetic compatibility, EMC)
  • Accommodation of ignition coils

On the N12 (Cooper) and N14 (Cooper S) engines, the crankcase ventilation system is considered a “regulated” system. This means that the flow of crankcase gasses is controlled with respect to crankcase pressure and intake manifold pressure (vacuum).

While both the N12 and N14 engines have a regulated crankcase venting system, each engine uses different methods of oil separation. The N12 engine separates oil from crankcase gasses using the “labyrinth” method. The N14 uses a “helix” or cyclone separator.

Both engines use a crankcase pressure control valve to maintain the required flow of gasses into the intake manifold.

The crankcase venting system on the N12 engine consists of a pressure control valve and a labyrinth oil separation system which is self contained in the cylinder head cover assembly.

The N14 engine differs in many areas from the N12 and the crankcase venting system is no different in this regard. The requirements for the crankcase venting system are slightly different. The N14 engine is turbocharged which greatly influences intake manifold pressure and hence, the operation of the pressure control valve.

 

Therefore the crankcase venting system is designed to function in two modes. One mode, is under load and the other is during decel or idle. There is a check valve in the cylinder head cover to prevent boost air from the turbocharger from entering into the crankcase.
