After 40 years of production even the British have made some improvements; this is one of them. The current production cylinder head nuts have a built in flange to spread the load and improve clamping force. They may be used on any A-Series engine. And please note- head nuts do have a finite life- they will not work forever just because you have not lost them does not mean you should not replace them. Not only does repeated on and off application degrade the threads but extended time under compression load can also effect their capabilities. Also fits a Sprite , and MG Midget .

Question:
Recently purchased:C-AHT279 Head Bolt Kit CAM4545 Cyc. Head Bolt Nuts Tam1521 Head Gasket I have been reading a lot regarding head bolt install and required torquing of head bolt nuts. Do head bolt studs get put in block dry or with oiled threads? What is the required torquing of upgraded head bolt nuts? Car is a 1968 MG Midget - 1275cc engine.
Answer:
There's no need to oil the threads. Just make sure that the threads in the block are clean and chased with a tap if you can. Those bolts should be torqued without oil to the standard specs. ARP type bolts usually have a different torque rating and the threads that take the nuts use a special torque grease. Also, the torque setting for aluminum heads is different (lower) than iron heads.

Adding oil where the nuts are would likely reduce the friction to the point where the reading would be bogus, in my opinion.

Make sure to re-torque the nuts after running the engine in for some time.

First a brief word on head gaskets. If it is not a genuine Rover or Payen gasket, don’t use it.
