Mine's an 87 UK car and originally had the Tupperware gauge in front of the driver (I believe). I don't think installing the classic 3 clock cluster like I have now was a plug n' play job. I didn't do it, but there are some splices and whatnot.
I don't think this really answers your question exactly, but gives you a datapoint hopefully.

Are these interchangeable? Will the plug thats in my car plug into a different year cluster? What clusters will work? Can i get something that reads higher than 90mph? What is an 88 cluster worth if i were to look for one or does anyone on here have one ? Im thinking about taking the digital cluster out and going back to a factory style cluster. Apparently i can use a mechanical to digital adapter and use it with my Vtec car.I just want to ger the dash back to stock and get a new walnut dash.
~ 30 minutes in a Mini is more therapeutic than 3 sessions @ the shrink. ~

I believe there were two types. Smiths and Nippon Seiko, I think the change over year was right around yours '88-89. The repro printed circuit for the back are available from MS. I'm pretty sure the connectors are different.
