Big Al, I still have the White Mark 2 that I drove from Texas to Florida for the Spring Fling then to New York which needs restoration. I'm preparing myself by learning mastic solutions. Jim

Just did this for the second time, ended up pushing the mastic into gap that there is between the tray & door frame then scraped the excess out with a putty knife. So that it just fills that gap.  If there is too much in there the lower track and chrome latch strip don’t push in far enough, and the lower track will not line up with the upper frame.

Big Al, I'm a bit thick. It's been decades since I played with sliding glass. I think I get it now as Dan did. Hope you are well.    Literally I'm at the tail end of the body work of the beach car. Working at replacing the rear valance and boot floor rot.  Jim

Ah, I get the picture now. The original post mentioned the upper channel and mastic. Tu,rns out the mastic is for the lower channel, not to keep it in place but to seal it from water penetration.

The idea is to not see it when you are done, but other than that.  The protection is not so much for that area as it is what's below, like door cards or rotting the door at the bottom over time.

Why wouldn't you put the sealant to the right the red line. This would seal a little more water.

I put it along the area in red, front to back. The post about it was from the MK1 site. Sorry the pic was to get help learning what year (59-60) my doors were.

It sounds like there is some spec that instructs you to put mastic beneath the metal strips and the top of the door to seal things up nice and tidy. I didn't use that on mine. oops!

I'm a little confused. Are you talking about the door skin. There is an inside and outside. You put the mastic on the inside lip  and when you push the window channel to meet the door  and it creates a seal.

In my case the upper seal needed nothing and pressed into place nicely. My understanding is the mastic is placed in a line along the inside edge of the door, just below the window opening. When the glass and lower window track is fitted in it presses against the mastic creating a water resistant seal in a area. Without it water could pass outside of the intended drain channel and tubes or holes on early doors .

If I were to use some non hardening goop, I would only put a tiny amount at the four corners of the upper channel. First I would determine the fit.

If we are talking sliding windows, doesn't the glass pretty much hold it up in the door frame? Even with one glass panel fully open, the other half of the channel would be still supported. ???

Acoustic sealant - black (maybe), sticks to anything, non-hardening. Cheap, maybe $5, fits in a standard caulking gun.
