I dont know for sure on a 79' -- but this is where they are in my 72'.

I reciently repaired my own dome interior lamp for this car!   was inspired by another car,

Purple wire =Always hot
Black = Ground
Purple with Black == that goes to the door swtiches.

The door switches provide GROUND when the doors are open.


just connecting the purple and black should have a working dome lamp by the switch on the lamp base. ( manual)
  Working door switches give the circuitt ground by the opening of the switch /  door  light comes on.

Once operational = I upgraded the 5W bulb to a LED Bulb = Amazing.
