Cheers guys.... she is a 1970... tachometer has RV1 on it... def neg earth car... wires seem to be the right colour to the dissy and I have 12v on the dissy terminal but no spark... guess I’ve stuffed something with the coil/breakers and / or timing in putting back together!

Before adding anything to Dan's post I want to make what at first may sound like a trivial point but is not.  When discussing wire colors, the dominant color is listed first and the stripe color second.

As Dan said, assuming you have a negative ground car with points (not electronic ignition) and a "standard" (non-ballast) ignition, your car should have:
1) A white wire from the ignition switch to coil (+).
2) A white/black wire from coil (-) to the distributor.

A Mk4 Sprite should be 1966 to 1971.  Therefore, assuming your car has the RVI type tachometer, it will be in series with the white wire coming from the ignition switch.  You will need to confirm whether the car is positive or negative ground, the tach model (look for RVI on the gauge face) and confirm the ignition type (ballast or non-ballast) for us to add any more information (if applicable).

You should have one wire coming from the ignition switch (power source) to one coil terminal and another going from the other coil terminal to the distributor. The dizzy points permit current to flow through the coil until the points open, wherupon the coil high tension fires through the plug leads.
