Well there's no evidence its not an authentic VIN (yes yes we know its really a (ordinary Austin Mini) chassis number).  I'm not really sure what the rules might be about attaching "incorrect" badges but then if an official agency is making incorrect claims to make a sale then......

But then, based on my (pretty extensive) experience with US officialdom, I don't think they're overly concerned with facts....

I suspect they're probably covered by this "what is..where is" proviso that places the onus on the bidder to establish the truth ..and bid accordingly.  If some dummy doesn't check then ..bad luck.

Cheers, Ian

Kinda Ironic...

The Government, Selling a 'fake"    Clone of a car. with a non authentic vin.....

Shouldn't they just crush it?

Oh wait, they would believe its worth something.

To make it easier to find, here's the direct link, with more photos and a shot of the wonky VIN plate:

direct link:
Lot 104 | 1964 Austin Mini Cooper

Completed auction results for Mini/MINI Coopers:

https://appletowing.hibid.com/auctions/past/lots/?q=Mini+cooper&cat=

CAUTION - YET ANOTHER SHAMELESS PLUG FOLLOWS:
A similar-looking Mk1 '67 Cooper in Florida that is on our "For Sale by Owner" page is currently on the transporter headed to its new home.

(If you know of other classic Minis that might be available - anywhere from project to pristine, or ugly or unfinished, please contact me offline.)

Now, back to the auction comments...

The results say "lot was passed" other results  say "price was realized" so i am guessing it did not meet reserve or did not go through the sale due to the vin number or other things.

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

True. Just about any running and driving Mini is worth that but my guess is it that the bid will close a lot higher than $5k.

The VIN is not quite right but matches that listed on the legal documentation driving the sale.

If you substitute the misplaced 5 with and S and search that VIN you come up with an attempted sale in 2014 by Motostalgia (although the car seems to have lost some bumper parts since then) and an actual sale listed in 2015 for $33K .  To be fair, at both of these auctions it was listed as a "Tribute S".

As of today the online bidding is at 5K (with a week to go and a live auction next weekend).

Is a '64 "Tribute S" really worth $30K?

Yes if you are buying it with other peoples stolen money...........

Seriously No it is not worth $30k for that or any tribute S imo.

There is so much wrong and incorrect with that car i would stay away from it myself.

Beware.

It may have lots of Cooperish trinkets on it but that VIN is for an ordinary mini- not a Cooper or S -
and that VIN plate is home made, not OEM.

VIN numbers often get mis-read - AA257L5515A should read AA2 S 7 L .......
