No guide that i know of in fact i have never heard of this problem on a Classic.
Was it working correctly before you re covered the seats if not that would have been the easiest time to address it, if it is a problem since the seats were re covered go back to the trim shop and have him remove the cover it may be something simple like a piece of material jammed in there.

Whoops thought I put somewhere that I have an 88 car.
As weather is declining over the next week I don't need it and I have been dealing with it the past few months so no rush
Is there a useful guide somewhere (besides Haynes) where I could find some more info on how to properly do it?
Google didn't really seem to be of much help, a lot of the answers pointing to the new MINI.

Anyway just about any seat you will need to pull back the covers to see what you have my guess would be worn or missing teeth on the mechanism but it could be anything at this point especially if the problem did not exist before the re covering of the seats.
You would be surprised how many seats i have seen installed on the wrong side of the car, besides i meant it as a temporary measure so you could sort the drivers seat out and still drive the Mini if you had/wanted to.

Hi there,
The seats I have are just the standard ones you'd find in a mini from that era, just re-upholstered. Don't have a picture handy at the moment sadly, but just the standard fare. Swapping passenger and driver side is not really an option (or well I guess it could be) because the seat controls would be on the wrong side.

It would help to know what seats you have.
Most of them you have to pull the covers back to get to the seat sachets and mechanisms.
Of course you could swap it out with the passenger one in the meantime.

Allright,
Next problem on the to-do list. My driver's side seat back does not lock properly in the full upright position, if I lean back against the seat back I end up with my head almost looking out the rear side windows!
It's not unsafe or anything, just gets tiring on longer drives as I can't really relax in my seat. Is there some locking tab or mechanism? I had a quick glance but couldn't really figure it out .
