The stock oil filter can absolutely cope with the pressure. Cartridge type filters are all the rage once again. I have several 4JJ Isuzu Diesel engines with Cartridge filters, and so yesterday when I serviced my late automatic mini with the Luberfiner filter that my heavy duty parts supplier can get overnight, I had a chance to wonder about the very few improvements Isuzu made to this system. It is simple, and it works.

The oil pressure shown on the gauge is the pressure in the oil gallery for the engine, not the gearbox.
As I understand it the gearbox pressure is much higher and a spin-on filter cannot cope with it.

Someone who posts here who was in Japan had a spin on conversion done and i believe used a Toyota set up.
A remote cannister upright set up may be an easier option.

Hey Mike,
You might look at the Triumph TR3/TR4. They use the same long canister filter as the Mini Auto and the canister looks to be the same size although I have never had the two side by side.
Moss Motors lists a spin-on conversion kit for the Triumph TR3/TR4.
I have been considering an attempt at converting to a spin-on as well and have been looking for posible options.
Keep us posted as to which direction you go or what solutions you come up with.
