I recently purchased a used 2007 Mini Cooper S. She ran great but just yesterday the old battery died while the car was idling. I put a new battery in, everything seemed to be running fine. Drove about 36 miles home and when I got off the main highway it sounded like a belt was whipping under neath the hood.   I’m having it towed to a local auto mechanic that specializes in BMWs and mini coopers. This is my third mini So I know a lot about the nuances but this in uncharted territory for me. I'm getting it towed to a mechanic this afternoon.

Let us know what you find out!

Just guessing: something caused your belt to fray badly, resulting n the flapping sound. That something could be a seized alternator or other appliance driven by the belt. A seized alternator would also cause the battery to not charge. Or something else not rotating would cause the belt to not move, thus not generating recharge. I would have expected to hear the belt squealing in either case, though with a modern car you may not have been able to hear it over the stereo.

.

"Hang on a minute lads....I've got a great idea."
