This is not a factory procedure and we've never tried this so we are unable to advise....
Well it sounds like the factory procedure is to hand them a pile of your hard earned cash. What's to loose, give it a try, cut it open already.
We have read cases where customers have successfully replaced the battery in the key fob for the 1st generation MINIs, we just don't have the details on which battery it takes ....

Bill: it must have been too early in the morning for you to get my joke: my mini is a 1981 classic which has no electronic fob. The fob I have is an old-fashioned key fob - just plain metal. Thus it works for any car.

The fob on the keys to my Mini don't require batteries. It is also interchangeable between vehicles without reprogramming. It is impossible for any thief's scanner to steal any codes from it too.
