Yes, that wire does look pinkish instead of brown with white stripe. So it does look like I have a ballasted system with a ~1.5 ohm coil, and from my cursory reads it seems if I replace the pinkish with white stripe wire to the coil with a switched 12 volt source, and disconnect the white with yellow wire, then I just connect the red from distributor to + of coil and black to -, then I should be ok?

The colors of the wires you list suggest your car has a ballast ignition system. Therefore, wiring your new aftermarket ignition is not quite so simple. Please see the thread and articles linked below. Also note that the wire you report as brownish with a white stripe was probably pink/white when new.

Ok, do I remove the wires on the coil or leave those and add these. Currently I have a white w/black stripe on the negative, and on the positive there is a white w/yellow stripe and brownish w/white stripe.

Red goes to the + side of the coil, black to the -.

I am replacing my points distributor on my ‘82 998 with an electronic one. The current one just has one wire coming off the body that plugs into a white w/black stripe wire from the harness. The new one has two wires, a red and black. What should I connect these two to?
