You really should keep one of those two engines so that when you're through with your project you can offer the engine with the VTEC when you sell it. Lots of folks have big dreams of building the perfect Mini by adding Honda power. Yeah, right. Through the process they either run into a major obstacle and don't finish it or they actually finish it and find that it is not easy or fun to drive. Check out the thread about "Wiring" where another VTEC project needs help with wiring up the beast. What, you mean the Mini wiring won't support the Honda engine and computer/electronic crap on the engine??? Throw buckets of money at it and then when you give up, you'll take a beating $$$ on the resell. Yeah, I'd keep one of the engines...the 1275 to be more specific. A 998 automatic is a DOG that you wouldn't be able to give away. Good luck with your project. See you in the for sale pages!

since this post started, I have been asking around. The consensus opinion back to me is that this is a display-only engine, nobody in their right mind puts one in a car they intend to drive much. USA shortblock value about $400 without cam, maybe $500 with cam. This matches my opinion of them from back in the day when a modded 850 could stay with one and was less likely to break. Which is why when I got one 40 years ago I only took it because it came in a pile of other parts I actually needed and since then it has aged gracefully under a workbench. YMMV.

I too would be interested in the value of a 997 complete power unit. I have a complete 997 project in parts. Title and Heritage, NOS O/S pistons and NOS brake intensifier. Due to health issues this one won't get done. Check my profile if you may have interest. Steve (CTR)

Basically because the 997 was based on the 850 which meant an extremely under square bore to stroke ratio that was/is not conducive to big revs.... When the Elf/Hornets came along (and more power was needed) they took the trouble to redesign the engine to reduce the stroke and get a more revvy (and lesser stressed) engine.
The irony being that the 998 was the only Cooper without a factory race history.... as the S came along to carry the honours.....
Cheers, Ian

Thanks for the replies. Then why did they go to the 998 instead of staying with the 997?

To me they are special because it was a race spec motor that John Cooper put in a Mini and sold BMC on the idea of building THAT car so he could homologate them for racing. It was the first. Were it not for the 997 engine from JC's race bench, there wouldn't have been a Mini Cooper or Cooper S. Kinda like the first Cobra's that Shelby built. Yeah, the later ones were the big engine, competitor killers, but you gotta appreciate the vision these guys had for what the public wanted. And yes, the only ones who seem to want the 997 engines are those who want to restore an early Cooper....correctly.

AFAIK the 997 is only special if you are restoring an early Cooper to factory spec or concours.
If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.
