The Haynes SU Automotive Repair Manual shows the blue spring when loaded at 2.5 oz. is 2.625" long. Red when loaded at 4.5 oz. is 2.635". I use a digital postal scale and a small steel rule to measure them.

0.040" with 30 coils does that make it blue?
0.030" with 38 coils does that make it red?

From new, apparently the colours are not easy to distinguish. I bought a new HIF44 from Burlen, which I had difficulty tuning. After sending it to a Mini mechanic, I still had problems. When I too the dashpot apart, I found both springs inside. I can't imagine the mechanic putting both in (he has/had a very high reputation). I can only assume it was shipped with both springs inside. As you can see they are physically quite different, except for colour.

How do you tell the difference between the red vs the blue ones. If they are new there's a touch of red or blue paint on them, but after working in a carb for several weeks/months/years/decades ...
