A stuck open thermostat seems like the obvious problem, I've actually experienced a Thermostat that had a broken leg from the disc plate to the return spring temperature tappet on my truck.  
But, do this one thing, watch your fill/overflow reservoir when the the car has been fully warmed up and is running.  You should see coolant cycle down from the side bypass tube and waterfall into the reservoir.  If you don't, you may have a coolant blockage or an air bubble restricting the coolant flow.  And yes, it can stay there for a long time and sometimes they don't drive out...
I had a friend of mine that had an Audi A4 and he has the very same problem, but it also blocked the coolant from circulating through the heater core and that car was like a refridgerator in the winter time. Just saying... I always take coolant issues very serious as I just got done R&R'ing, surfacing and rebuilding the head on my 2008 R56 due to overheating.  Its not hard, but just a lot of work and lots of down time for the car.

I am inclined to agree with the others, it sounds like a defective thermostat....  If you email us the last 7-digits of the vin number, we can identify the correct replacement thermostat for you.  [email protected]

I had that happen on a VW GTI

The way I knew it was this:
On 5 mile downhills in the mountains in the summer the temp gauge started falling (a lot) rather than staying steady at 190.

Of course, if all you have is an idiot light, you would never know.

When I replaced the thermostat, I found a few months later that the improved winter heater output occurred 2-3 minutes faster.

Note key words: Only faster to the warm-up temp,  not hotter once it got there.

i was just wondering if any of you have had any issues with heating in your minis. i have an 09 JCW that takes a considerable amount of time for the heater to work. i have heard and read that it does take some time for some people's to come heat up but the problem i'm having is it doesn't stay hot. when i accelerate, it gets warmer and when i come to red light or a stop, it gets cooler. would anyone on here know why?
