Cracked ones seem easy to come by just a matter of recovering them. I have seen a few done and some with an ashtray delete or a time clock in it's place and even double coloured stitching to match the piping on the seats.
The biggest issue i have seen with the flat dashes is if the gauges are not angled like the factory dashes you will have the same issue of not being able to see them.
I use the gps on my phone but seen someone advertising an aftermarket heads up display that reflects off the windscreen.

I'll have to do some prototyping first to see what works. Looking on the interweb, the hardest part might be finding an upper dash to use.

Easy enough to do the hardest part will be drilling the holes for installation in the upper dash rail with the windscreen in place. Have you driven or sat in a Mini with the three clocks in front of you as they are not that visible and still present the same set of problems to me, also with your aftermarket Miata seats being lower than stock it may just make the vision issue worse.

Fishing for information. Is it possible to put a padded upper dash in a car without one? And how hard is it? I like the look of my wooden dash but I'm tired of having to peep around the steering wheel constantly to see my gauges. Considering doing an update to a flat dash with driver side gauges, but it looks like I'd need the upper dash to make it work.
