I thought maybe the fuel system was not holding pressure, but it would start after a few tries if this were the case.

Have you had any water intrusion into the cab or driven thru flooded streets recently?  I'm thinking an intermittent ground somewhere..

If you have a manual transmission, you might check the clutch switch that detects you have the clutch depressed before it would let you start the car. - not sure how this could be intermittent, but worth a check so you can eliminate it as a cause. If this is the problem, the engine won't turn over...
I've actually had an intermittent clutch switch issue on another car. But I can't see how that would be related to heat/sun.

Not like an owner's forum, although that would be another place to ask. I'm talking about TSBs, which the manufacturers publish to let owners and service providers know about known problems. You can find them online for pretty much any modern vehicle. LIKE THESE

No, haven't run thru any puddles. Someone mentioned a relay right behind the steering under the hood. I'm going to give that a try. Thanks for the reply.

I've heard of some Hondas having that problem, something about a relay or switch being mounted up behind the dash where it soaks up the sun. Never heard about MINIs having that issue. Have you checked with BMW to see if there are any technical service bulletins on that problem?

When you say it won't start in the mid pm sun, does it start after a few tries or not at all?
