My 85 1000 E failed state inspection due to play in the steering rack inner joint non-drivers side. This has been a common problem with the later racks. I have been making a single rack out of two. The rack ends while not rebuildable like early racks are removable and can be installed on other racks. There are two problems I have found with late racks. The joint and the bushing that supports the non-drivers' end of the rack. I have tried a couple of approaches to bushing issue. Machining some oil-lite bronze, Delrin and nylon bushings. I have yet to install any of the racks I have reworked. But they are rebuilt painted booted and ready. The thought is trying one on my car first. The bronze bushed one is for a race car should I ever get to it.

If there is truly no lost motion in the steering or suspension and no issue with engine supports I'd give serious thought to the diff. pin. I have had at least five trannys blow a hole in the case due to diff. pin failure. Another issue I have run into with late trannys is the first and third motion shaft bearings failing. Steve (CTR)

I've read several of your posts from 2011 regarding a sloppy steering rack. Several folks on this and another forum seem to think my mystery "clunk" is related to my steering rack. Take a look at this thread [link], particularly the symptoms and when they occur and see if you think it might be the rack. I've pushed, pulled and wobbled the rack and arms every which way and it seems tight to me. Sounds like you've been down this road before, so I'm curious to see what you think. Thanks!
