Or is this even necessary? Does anyone have an idea of the RPMs at 50MPH in 4th?
AT = at 50 MPH  has RPM about 3400....

Roughtly = AT's were geared with a pretty "high' final drive.

70-75 MPH is close to 4000RPM

(my guestimates are all from working on a  a 89 Mini  with an AT.. SO YMMV)

What do you mean by "AT" Automatic Transmission? If so, yes, you could put one on - depending on the model of tach, a wire from the coil, a ground and a wire from the instrument light harness. The only issue might be if your car is positive ground , in which case you'd need a tach that will work on either positive or negative ground.

.

"Hang on a minute lads....I've got a great idea."
