Well with any internal combustion engine you need fuel, spark, and compression, all timed correctly. You can narrow your area of repair by giving it a shot of starting fluid, if it starts and dies you have a fuel problem. Pull a plug wire, or coil and put a spark plug in it grounded to the engine and see if it sparks. You can also buy the proper noid light, and see if the injectors are getting power to squirt. If all that's good a compression test, then a service manual will take you from there. Good luck.
Other good no fuel tests are to listen for the couple seconds of fuel pump running noise when you first put the key in the run position. Are you out of gas? did you get a load of water with the last fill up? have you changed the fuel filter?
