For the Japanese imported Minis this will make registering the cars a lot easier. Still have the right hand drive insurance problems.
The new rules take effect on April 1st. They will drop the passenger car and truck side of the tests and increase testing on commercial vehicles.
The cost of the test was free for the first go and you had to pay for a retest if you failed.
You also only had 10 days to fix the "problem".
Also any other non pollution control "problem" check engine soon light was an automatic fail.
There is still a surplus in the governments e test bank accounts.

The e-test was probably more effective when it was initiated. However in the intervening (what is it?) 25 years or so, vehicle technology has pretty much taken over management of emissions control. When your modern vehicle works properly, it is monitoring its output and continually adjusting to suit. When it doesn't work properly (right down to you not tightening the fuel cap) it issues dire warnings and may switch to limp-in mode, making the driver respond to the need for service.
I imagine that the boy racers will have a heyday modifying their vehicles (like we did when we were younger), but their modifications will need to be reversed to sell their car, or if they get caught.
It used to be a cash grab, but in Ontario in the last few years, the cost of the e-teat was covered by the government, so it became a taxpayer burden.
I won't miss it.

Where there’s smoke there’s now cannabis. Does the new law go into effect on Monday the 1st? Returning to the US that day, can’t wait for the customs experience.

Not a Canadian commenting here...
They realize the new influx of tax cash from the Cannabis legalization next month will be plenty of new cash flow vs maintaining a 'system' of car emissions checks.
Smart move.. Smart move

Big news, Our new Premier Doug Ford will announce the scrapping of the e-tests for all cars in Ontario today
It’s about time, just a Government tax grab
This follows his move to dump the Carbon tax program where we were sending big sums of money to California of all places
Commen Sence is back in Ontario, now if we can just get DONALD to get on side with his Country killing tarrifs we just might make it. !!!!!
