Single cable handbrake started use in 1976 MK4. Post a photo of where the cable comes thru the floor and how it connects to the lever.
Adjusting the handbrake must begin with the rear brake shoes being properly adjusted (wheels off the ground, 5/16" wrench on square adjuster shaft) with the cable(s) being slack, then the single cable style can be adjusted at the lever to give 3 or 4 ratchet clicks to fully locked. For twin cables adjust one side so at two clicks up on the lever the rear wheel for that side can barely be turned by hand then adjust the other side to the same amount of drag to give equal force to both wheels.
I know a bonifide 68' pick up - with the floor from a 79 clubman. A photo may explain a lot.

I just spoke to an authority on Classic Minis (mine is a documented '68 with sliding windows and external hinges) who swears
the single-cable hand brake did not appear until the 1970s. My bonifide '68 has a single-cable hand brake and nut adjustment. He also told me the hand brake should not be adjusted in the cabin, but only at the rear wheels. Now I am confused. He tells me this must have been a modification. With my having all of the original history, including the name and type of tea the original owner drank. I don't think they would have cared to modify the originality of the hand brake as the rest of the car is original. How is this possible?
