I asked the question about the roof vent on another thread and someone posted that they thought the vents were optional. ?

I think to prove the year or thereabouts of the year as yours is a smooth roof i would check when they changed to a ribbed roof, it would seem more accurate.

Sounds like a late 65 or early 66.. has the roof vent as well, which according to Mini, The Definitive History, was deleted in 1966..  so I think this is close enough..

The very low 800 xxx can be as early as November 1965, depending upon the car type, and 820 xxx can be into February 1966. The sequence seems to be different for the Cooper S cars and the Wolseleys, for instance. I don't have anything around that time for any of the long wheel base cars.

8***** would work for the first half of '66.

I did get several windscreens with the body, so will check these, but no way of knowing which one is original.. I thought flat roofs were discontinued in 64.. but if they were around in 66, then maybe that is the year of the shell.. I know the W stands for estate, and it should have been a V, but there were all sorts of registration mix ups in the early days..  have had to correct serial numbers on a few early Minis for transposed digits or 5 instead of S in the serial..  My six digit serial is lower that the woody range you posted.. it's in the low 8xx,xxx.  So maybe that also fits the 66 range? The "W" in your chassis number means "Woody" as in estate car / station wagon.  I know some people call all of the LWB minis "vans" which is OK by me, but a proper mini panel van would have a "V" in the number.

Like Chuck, I have some records of chassis numbers, and I have a November '66 Austin Woody record with the number A AW7 955***.

Is your 6 figure number in that ball park ?

Also all electrical parts have a date code like 11 66, glass is also date coded.

I've tried to figure out the serial number range per year as well.  Here's what I've figured out so far.  Numbers are approximate, all Austins, all built in the fall (Aug - Dec.)  Others can add to this as well and maybe we'll get a good reference:

66 -    895,000
67 - 1,050,000
68 - 1,200,000
69 - 1,350,000

Saw a 62 Morris once that was around 120,000

From Checkler's VIN Decoder
>>>>>>>>
The sequential build number:

The first car at Longbridge was number 101, as was the first at Cowley. From then on, each factory continued with their own number sequence regardless of the model; e.g., Saloon, Van, etc. In other words, each model did not start at 101 and maintain its own sequence. Saloons and Vans, etc., are mixed in the number sequence along with the Cooper and Cooper S models.

The number sequence was into seven digits, #######, by the end of September 1969.

I am starting back on my Mini Van rebuild, and am trying to figure out the date of the shell. I have paperwork that it was registered in 66 as Austin 805 SW . , but the Van seems to be older than that. It is a Van with the long load bed and no rear seats.  It was just a shell when I got it with a fibreglass flip front so no clues from the front apron.  It has a smooth roof, with a vent, outside gas tank, wiper motor mount on LH side and only two holes in the scuttle for the wipers. The demisters on the upper dash rail have a metal flange on them. I am thinking that this is more likley 63 or 64?  Anything else to look at on the body.. no serial plates and did not come with wiper motor or tail lights, or and engine!  Serial starts with AAW7L xxxxxx  which indicates Austin, A-series engine, Estate, MK I, LH drive.. and the rest of there number is 6 numbers...   Is there a range of numbers per year?  Thanks
