I've done a 'few' balljoints in my time on a wide selection of cars, but have yet to see one done properly-properly on the car - it's just a PITA torquing them correctly while changing shims.  The fact that you have 3-9 play as well as 12-6 does point at a wheel bearing (or CV or drive flange) but I'd suggest revisiting the ball joints while you have the hub on the bench.
Yeah, I'm now looking at the drawings in Haynes and it's obvious the hub has to come off. As hard as it was to be on my back for 45 minutes, I'm happy with my in situ ball joint job. While chasing down the source of the steering wheel vibration, I did in fact revisit the ball joints. I thought one was a one was a bit loose and removed a couple of shims.

As much as didn't want to remove the hub(s), I'm looking forward to working in an upright position at the bench. Thanks for your help!

I’m getting a vibration through the steering wheel at certain speeds. The wheels are balanced and I’ve replaced the ball joints but the vibration remains. With the left front wheel off the ground I get about 1/8” of play in the wheel when I tug at 12 and 6 o’clock and likewise at 9 and 3 o’clock. Am I correct in diagnosing the problem as a bad wheel bearing?

I’ve ordered a Timken wheel bearing replacement kit and watched a couple of YouTube videos. The videos and Haynes insist  I must remove the front hub to replace the bearings. They said the same thing about replacing the ball joints but I was able to do the ball joint job with the hubs in place. It was quite easy, actually. So, do my hubs really need to come off to replace the bearings?
