Whee,
we have friends in Dallas that own a Land Rover repair shop. If you need help on the Metroplex let us know and we will get you support and shelter. They remember my Moke bringing up the rear of our lap around the Texas Motor Speedway.

malsal.. the story I heard.. was the the black  moke had NOT run in OVER FIVE years.. it  sure was NOT a daily driver by any means..   you can NOT fix STUPIC or cure a SKIN FLINT..   btw. I drove the blues wagon from earl nc to Magog quebec  about 2500 miles the day it got off the boat from the UK..in 2000 but I know  my guys in the UK had replaced EVERYTHING..   and then drove it again on that same road trip in 2003.. without ANY problems..   all about the PREP..  good luck on the voyage.. whee.. later bc

Drive it just take some spares with you, i love road trips and getting away from the norm there is usually issues and always a story to tell at the end just be prepared.
One way or another there will be a story to be told. Even if I end up getting there and not being able to start the Moke because it's so wet.

whee.. I have TWIC card of course .. but Columbus Pier in port of charleston sc   can be ALL day affair.. so of late I just have Allison at Turkys towing pick up from the port and then my towing guys can pick up on the weekend at  Turkys.. I never  drive anything from the port anymore..unless I have three car come on same boat.. btw.. I have made about  150 trips to the port of charleston in last 20 years..  one boring EIGHT drive.PLUS wait time at port  .  later bc  ps.. three cruise ships come in DAILY to downtown charleston..   not like you can pick up cars and then do eat lunch downtown..  It has to be like MARDIS GRAS some days..with city full of DRUNK dancing bears..

My original plan was to have it shipped. However based on the weather associated with Tropical storm Gordon I want to get it out and away from the port ASAP.

I may end up driving it just to Houston and getting it in an undercover garage (let me know if you have a garage you could volunteer for this please!), otherwise I have a spot for it in Dallas.

I have a friend who will drive from Dallas->Denver with me, if all is looking good with the car and I'll have the opportunity to do some service work on it there in Dallas before leaving.

Returning a tow-dolly and a towing vehicle is a contingency plan, as if I start it up at the port and it's just not happy, getting it towed under AAA to a nearby place where I can get a shipper to pick it up from.

When I bought my 63' Cooper my wife and I flew from San Francisco down to San Diego to pick it up and drive it home up the coast. We didn't make it all the way after snapping a fan belt and seizing the alternator on a Saturday night in Carmel. Even with the breakdown, it was one of the best trips of my life. We took our time and checked out all the little oceanfront towns along the way. We had a minimum of tools and spare parts, a stash of water and snacks, backup batteries for our phones, and a AAA card. I was 100% convinced we wouldn't make it all the way home, so I had researched various towing options to get it from wherever it might crap out back to SF. As luck would have it, we made it just inside the towing radius for our AAA membership so it was nearly painless.

If you are mentally and logistically prepared for the worst and willing to take it with a smile, I say go for it. You'll never forget the journey. My wife has a picture of me watching the car get pulled up onto a flatbed still with a smile on my face.

Hi,
My Moke has cleared customs. I'll be picking it up tomorrow.
The current plan is to drive it to Dallas. In Dallas I will assess - depending on how the car is doing and how I feel, I will either continue drive to Denver or I have arranged temporary storage in Dallas from where I will get it shipped.

If you are on / near the route and willing to be an emergency contact in case of break-down/emergency parts need etc. I'd very much appreciate it if you use the email address in my profile to let me know your contact information.

Thanks!
-Peter
