The work is basically about the same with removing EVERYTHING off of the front of the car.  I had some other stuff I wanted to address, Timing Chain and Guides, Thermostat, Water Pump, and misc.  But the moral to the story is: with a floor jack and a transmission jack, I was able to R & R the transmission WITHOUT dropping the subframe.  It can be done!  I think it saved me tons of hours with disassembly and reassembly of the suspension. Don't let the manual and videos intimidate you, I did it and since the transmission is not very big or heavy, it was easy to manipulate to make the squeeze.  Also, you don't have to buy BMW MTF LT-4 fluid at $45/quart.  Valvoline MTF Synchromesh is a replacement option.  But check your facts and don't take my word for it.

Hey roadwarrior, thanks for the post.  Good to know you were able to do all the fixes without a hoist - Congrats!

Hey There We Wolf. I bought a new Mini this weekend which is parked right next to my classic. To each is own.

Hey Road Warrior: Cool you found a short cut to the clutch solution. Years ago I had to change the vanos seals in my 528. They said it was a 13 hour job and you had to lock the cams and crank in place. I was able to mount wrenches on the cams, carefully remove and reinstall the vanos system and get it done in about 2 hours. When you are determined (or lazy like me) you get resourceful.

Most of all, thank you for posting. The more knowledge on this site the better.

If you've never driven a classic mini, you certainly should some day. It's a whole other level of driving.
