red riley.. oh that is funny... btw.. ran up on 6 foot rattler out running trails on KM state park.. scared me to death.. but it just slithered off.. guess respect.. one snake to another ?? later bc

Now that the classic (real!) Mini owners have had some fun, heed onetim's suggestion. The only way to find out what is causing the rattle is to get someone to ride in the back where they can listen closely and poke and push to see if the rattle gets better or worse. It could be anything from loose trim to missing screws to rusty bits falling down inside the hatch door to loose hinges or latch or even something not actually in or on the hatch. It may just sound like it is coming from the hatchback for someone sitting in the front but actually coming from someplace else, like a storage compartment or spare tire well.

What you have is one of the few carry over features of the original mini, it should not be repaired, and should be looked at as part of the experience. People pay big money for this feature in a original mini.  

But if you want to mess up the car, have someone ride in the back pushing on assorted things until it's located.

That's not his problem. What you are suggesting is a Battery Rattle. He definitely said he had a Hatch Rattle. Maybe look for eggs that are hatching...
