Just removed the wax casing.
on the shaft I see “E8” stamped vertically.
any idea what this indicates?

From a previous post :
- tooth count is 11/20/25/31
- Id on bottom is IA3686 (possibly 1A3686)

 Feedback thus far :
- not mini
- 3 speed synchro
- early 60’s or prior

i also posted on an MG forum.
still awaiting feedback.

Still unable to identify this laygear.
Thought I would add this post to see if anyone who has not seen this topic has any input.

I keep forgetting to look at my lay gear collection. If I figure out what it is I'll let you know. If you find any other NOS tranny parts I'm always looking. I have a lot of engine, tranny and suspension parts here on east coast if you are looking. Steve (CTR)

If it's 6" long it's a 4 synchro but the 31t fourth gear is odd.  Quite a wide ratio gearbox.
Weren't the majority of Mini laygears a 29t?  The two in my garage are and one is unmarked, I think from an Austin America.  You might narrow it down by determining the i.d. of the bearing bore on the end with 31t.

It may have been 21A3686?  Number does not come up. Oh well, there are more than half a dozen possible laygears... you have an extra for something!

Often people acquire extra parts for their car without realizing there were many types and ratios of gears used in different models. A 66S probably came with a 22G333 gearbox which was a close ratio 3-synchro box.  You may no longer have that transmission, or the new laygear has a different ratio....  Can you tell if it's a 3-synchro gear?  Are there any numbers under the "wax"?

If you can post a picture we can easily tell if it's a 3 or 4 synchro gear!

Just opened another box of parts for my 66 S and found a lay gear (still in wax) that is not the same as the lay gear in my tranny.

it measures 6” long and has the following gears/teeth :  11/20/25/31.

I checked around on the internet but could not find anything similar.

any thoughts?
