And it can be said that all of the Mokes were not striped the same.

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

Red and white stripes from a concert in 1966. Not sure the dates of the other photos.

Prototype "Mini Surfer" with Capitol Starline gold record for hubcaps. Giveaway Mokes were much different than the prototype.

Bill asked where did Barris come up with the red zebra stripes. Well, first off, the red and white stripes are pretty much evenly spaced and parallel. Zebra stripes are not, so lets please not refer to them that way. Now, for the real skinny on the stripes. They are based on one single item, but became a theme on this kustomiztion! Capitol markets their records under several different labels, depending on what market they are going to. In 1966, (the year of this promotion) they changed the label on their "Capitol Starline" records to what I would refer to as a red and white bullseye. The entire project was to promote their hit group The Beach Boys, and to tie in their new label. Initially there was supposed to be gold records with the "Starline" labels on them. Barris put them on the prototype, but none of the others ever had gold record hubcaps. Next, the Beach Boys were notorious for wearing pinstripe shirts. Rid and white stripes now make sense. But wait, Barris took the theme even further. Each car was to have a surfboard on the roof, so he had to source them. One of the most popular surfboard builders at the time had a shop not far from Barris. Costantine "Con" Colburn was the guy who supplied the boards. Check out his logo and it goes very nicely with the red and white Starline label. Make no mistake about it, marketing is a well thought out strategy and these Mokes were pure marketing!

That black thing or things on either side of the bulkhead are the removable speakers. Barris made some period correct Organ Pipe speaker covers used in a lot of Hot Rods back then and put them in the Moke. They are hung on the bulkhead so they are removable. They were advertised as having "A Mile of Wire" so you can remove them and place them near your party. They held a 6" round speaker hooked up to a Borg Warner 8 track and a Motorola voltage converter.

Malsal, I don't think these stripes have ever been painted over. They are worn through in many spots down to the original white, no layers. The stripes that look black in the pictures still have a tinge of red in them on vertical surfaces that did not get as much sun. If you rub them with a damp rag they rag turns red. As has been said before these cars were put together hastily and inexpensively. The tape marks and over spray from the original work leaves a lot to be desired.

I ran into a friend i had not seen in quite a few years and he was asking if i was still messing with Mini's and Mokes.
He knew of this Moke and the sellers Dad who had owned it for quite some time, he told me the stripes on it were re painted on it years ago with paint from NASA. I asked the Father if it was for sale years ago when i was looking into a lift he had for sale but he said no it wasn't as he was going to restore it someday which i figured would probably never happen and it didn't in his and his Son's ownership.
Glad to see you got it back on the road and to have the surf board with it still is quite amazing.

Dr Mini may want to answer as well but from the information I can gather only 6 were made. One striped top and gold record wheel version for demo and the 5 in the picture with the Beach Boys in front of the Barris shop. That pic was taken in early July and the cars were at the radio stations in late July for an August 1st give away. Capitol Records probably has the final answer as they were the ones that ordered and paid for the promotion.

Werewolf. MParts is sending me the hood straps so I should not have to get them made locally. I also was able to get the car titled here in NC.

Looks like his daughter is going to sell off some of his stuff. I doubt very seriously if there's anything Beach Boy related in the sale. I have had several conversations with Joji Barris about the Mokes and she said there's not much in their archives. Probably the same 4 photos everyone has seen on the Internet. They certainly don't have the black and white photos of our BB Moke as it was staged for giveaway in Boston. The original negatives of that photo shoot came with our Moke.
