cooper tune. I have 12 british car of my OWN.. and I use 93 NON ethanal in ALL them.. costs another $1 per gallon.. but well worth in the long run. it is MUST for minis with carbs.. later bc

I have a mark one mini with the 1293 cc engine and an HIF 44 carb so things are not gonna be the same. I’ve been running 92 octane with some lead substitute  four years. The lead substitute is no longer available but you can find it on eBay and it’s called CD2 Lead substitute.The head is a Cooper S 163.I’ve had the head for a while and had it magnafluxed last year. So I threw it on.  The machinist at that time told me the head look like it had just been done. Unfortunately I waited till this year to ask him if it had steel inserts for the valves.  He remembered the head and thought it had steel seats but he couldn’t be sure.   Now I’m running ethanol free premium with Led substitute.

Not sure but I'd suspect a 90 998 would have a lead free cyl. head. Ethanol has just become a fact of life. If you only drive it once a month or less then non ethanol would be a good choice. Other wise I'd give mid grade a try and listen closely for any pinging. I have a 1360 Cooper S which I set up for 9.5 to 1 compression and can run regular for around town. If taking a trip or plan a fast run above 75 mph I run mid grade. I have covered 150,000 miles in this mini and do drive mine everyday. Steve (CTR)

What octane gas would be best for a stock 998cc, HS4 carb, 1990 Classic Mini for every day driving? Thanks.
