This description on Amsoil website for 5-30 manual transmission oil sounds like doubletalk. First they say it is for light viscosity, non-extreme pressure fortified settings, but then claims with "additive technology"  it is "ultimate" and outperforms (regular) motor oils in that setting.

brand names mean nothing.  The company that bought your favorite brand 30 years ago owes you nothing, but they own the trademark. So they put that name on a plastic bottle that contains oil for modern Chinese cars, not your vintage car.  In the UK, you might be good finding an oil for an auto engine with a shared transmission, not here.   For street use, I get motorcycle oils. Those were made with high-shear chems that kept gears from pitting and putting metal schnitzels into the oil .    Somewhere around 2000 I got lost in the alphabet soup of oil specs, now I just look for a rating of JASO-MA, which brings me to some Rotellas and Mobil-1s at wallieworld or expensive oil at bike shops.  I use the expensive stuff in bikes.   I like the Shell logo better, so that goes in the Minis and change it often.

Joe Gibbs Racing BR1 15/50 break in oil then the JGR HR1 15/50.

Not cheap, but has all the proper chemicals and doesn't break down and go thin like some other oils I could mention.

Mantra when we started playing with Minis in southwestern B.C. almost 30 years ago was Castrol 20/50....

Got to Australia 20 years later and asked what oil?  Answer the cheapest 10-30 available...and change oil/filter every 3,000 miles.  So I drove 25,000 miles around Australia.  Motor used less that a pint of oil on a 70 day trip.

I did switch to 20-50 on getting the Mini to Canada and after going transcontinental return & San Diego return...on tear down, the crank & rod journals and tail all polished up std/std.  Bearings looked great.

So what oils do you use & why...what research do you pay attention to etc.?
