I have just heard back from one of these engine tranny combos and he is showing 90 mph /GPS at 4000. His is a factory tach and my tach is a cheap Auto Zone one. My 96 mph was done in a tight four car draft out on interstate 81. Running those speeds with people you don't know working though people talking on their phone at 70 mph does not leave a lot of time for checking numbers. The wide ration 998 Metro tranny does allow quick get away but drops 1000 rpm between each gear requiring a engine with lots of torque. The high point of my set up is 70 mph at 3000 rpm which is a nice noise level just before wind noise becomes a issue. Steve (CTR)

I have recently picked up another wide ratio tranny and the OD drops if interested.

At the current 80 mph at 4000 revs someone has changed something or the speedo, tachometer, speedo gearing, or gearing itself is off,  they will not achieve those figures with a stock Jap spec 998.
I owned a 1275 Moke with 13's and it was geared to do 20 mph per 1000 revs i could only imagine how much slower offthe line a 998 would be with that gearing.
Mini's like to rev and are much better suited to the back roads than the highway at 90 mph.
Start by verifying the speedo with a GPS.

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

I build a power unit based on 1275 Metro with a special gear box that allows 96 at 4000. That my friend is about it. Your AC 998 will never pull that kind of gear and no combo of wheel and tire will do much for you. My chart shows a 2.95 CWP with 10 s running 77 mph at 4000. I had a 998 with 2.95 and while slow off the line I liked the gearing over all. I did get a ticket for 79 in a 55 so it all fits. I'm currently fitting 165 s on 5.5 / 12 s and having issues steering at a lowered ride height. Steve (CTR)

90 at 3500 from a 998 simply isn't going to happen, and is actually impossible to gear for - the maximum you can get is 22mph per 1000rpm using an economy primary and first motion shaft input gear and a 2.7cwp.
80 at 4000 would be considered long gearing by pretty much everyone, as it will generally kill the acceleration and Mini-ness of the car.

I want to know what is the best wheels and tires/tyres for my 1991 mini mayfair ii japanese export edition. It has been converted to 10in, it has A/C, it's a 998, and it only does 80mph at 4000rpm. what will help the performance? I want to do at least 90mph at 3500, so should I change the wheels? it's a 3.5x10 alloy cooper S replica wheels, I don't know what kind of backspacing it has or anything on the disc brakes. should I change the gearing to a smaller gearing on the diff? I am in michigan and the car is in japan now currently looked after by my grandfather, so I can't look at what kind of parts it has.

Thanks
