I think from memory (it's been a while) the MK III has a brass plug that has to be drilled out to release the barrel.
If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

Sorry, I don't know the MK3 switch.
On Mk1 switches you remove the switch from the switch plate and look for a hole in the side of the switch assembly. Put the key in the barrel. Turn the key until you see a brass button inside the switch while looking through the hole. Push a thin wire or small Allen wrench through the hole to depress the small brass button. While holding the brass button depressed, pull the key to remove the cylinder.
Again, that's for Mk1. I don't know the Mk3 switch but it may be similar.

I have a '72 Saloon from New Zealand and need to take out the ignition switch key cylinder to see why it isn't working correctly. Sometimes the key hits something inside that prevents it from sliding all the way in. I can't turn the key when that happens. How do I remove the cylinder? I am familiar with other cars' designs, just haven't done this on a Mk3 Mini yet. Anyone out there know what to do?
Thanks,
Craig
