If you have a pre Verto assembly the little A s go to the numbers stamped on the flywheel for timing. The A on the back plate is sometimes hard to see or maybe even missing. There should not be a problem installing the back plate any way around. There is no offset weight as these are what is called internally balanced engines. I have always had my assemblies balanced when rebuilding. My first mini was an 850 which I had balanced. Next came my first Cooper S which I rebuilt without balance. First time I started it the mirrors vibrated so bad at 1750 I stripped and had it balanced and installed new rings again without even driving it. That was in 1971 and I keep balancing them till this day. Steve (CTR)

My project car came with two flywheel/pressure plate sets.  Unfortunately, neither were together in position. I was under the impression that all parts were stamped with an "A" for balance alignment, but it looks like only the leg on the pressure plate actually has a stamp.  Both flywheels have nothing.

Is there a convention as to what orientation the flywheel would have typically have been used?  For example. was the "A" leg usually aligned with the timing marks or is it completely random?

I'd rather not have to take the whole rotating assembly to a shop to be balanced so am hopeful there is another way to figure it out.

Thanks,

Corey
