If you're in Houston join restorationmini.com/forum. We have several texas members and a few of my builds or paint jobs running around down there. Someone will help you find a good car. -Dan S from OK

I'd also avoid Classic Mini automatics. Mini automatics require oil changes every 2000 miles or they suffer early deaths. Most of them have not been maintained as they should have, and they are a handgenade with the pin half-way out!

If I was moving to the states and wanted a mini I would speak to Dan Stoughton in OK. He rebuilds minis for fun and does a rather smashing job of it.
I am sure he could either locate or has a car for rebuild in his shop that he could do a car to your specification
Cheers. Peter

As for buying one in America, do you any website I can check?
Thanks

There are some decent looking minis for sale in the for sale section of this site. Remember it rains a lot in texas, owning a mini in rainy wet places is a bad idea. And also if you plan to own a mini and wanted to save money, you need to know how to wrench... or at least learn how to do oil change. But since you plan to live in texas where citizens dont require to pay taxes, then you can save money to pay someone to do it for you while you fix your neck tie before going to work.

Thanks to all the replies!. I can see that the group is quite active....
I guess my main concern is the fact I heard from another friend that his classic car (not a mini, I think is a mustang) only have permit to be on the street if going to a show. In that sense he only gets to see his car in the garage and/or drive it once in a full moon to x or y place.
I do love the mini but unfortunately I'm not good with tools. I would love to keep up with a mini but only if I get to drive it everyday.
BTW, mine just got out of full service. Runs awesome! a while ago I changed the suspension and raised it a bit so I could cope with roads in Malaysia

By the way, in welcoming you to the forum we also need to warn you about our resident troll, Specialist. It's harmless, ignore it, but don't even bother reading its advice. Like a broken clock, sometimes it is right, but mostly not. Ignore and talk to everyone else!

well, if your mini has a sentimental value to you, then bring it here in the US, but if it';s just a regular mini, then just sell it in malaysia and get another one here.
Bringing in minis to US from other countries is like a game of chance, The US customs will inspect everything. Vin, make model, weight etc and it will inspect for bugs, seeds and hay that might have accidentally included in the shipment, and if they are not satisfied, they will either crash your mini or send them back to it's origin at your expense.
My advice to you is to get a cheap beat up 850cc classic mini, take the engine off the car and throw the engine to the ocean because 850cc nowadays are useless...cannot even do 25mph...it's better off thrown out in the ocean and sit in the seabed to make a good habitat for fish and crustaceans.
To continue---> And then find a good running Honda vtec car, fish out the engine and the wire harness and transfer it to your classic mini shell.and do the conversion. NOW you have a nice Vtec mini that can keep up with the modern US traffic.

It's almost certainly more practical to buy a mini here versus import yours - however, I've met quite a few folks who imported their car from when they were abroad and none of them have regretted it. (those who successfully got it here that is...)

Looks like this club is mostly BINIs, but I see some classic MINIs in their intro video, and they are in Houston

I think that selling your mini there and buying a mini already in Texas is the best plan. A car without the original engine, along with a host of other items, could be excluded from being imported.
Your question: are classic minis being brought up to Texas requirements for daily use? Since minis were sold in the U.S. then cars like that obviously meet the requirements. Daily use is a simple matter for folks with the smallest amount of mechanical aptitude.
There are mini clubs in Texas and some great mini owners. Good luck.

"Thewerewolf" is Bill Cox, and he's your guy to get you through the red tape if you want to import. He should be able to tell you if you can bring your current Mini in. Big Al and Malcolm are also good sources. But as you can see, "Specialist" isn't one in this situation, being wrong about car age eligibility.
If you decide to purchase in the US and need it shipped, Dr. Mini is your guy.
