Interesting read, nothing has changed, old Bill is still the self proclaimed expert and Pete is destitute.  By the way, does anyone still have a pic of that hair-lip Mini old bill was hawking years ago?   Hugh, I had a job for you but you disappeared on Facebook. Cheers.

Sorry, the name doesn't ring a bell.  We were active in the Houston 356 club, but I don't recognize the name.  Then again, there were only about 10 or 12 who were super serious and usually showed up for the drives.  Maybe another 20 or so who came to the annual dinner.

Deb-
Did you ever come across a guy named Haas Fogle when you lived in Houston? Had a passing interest in Minis, and more than a passing interest in 356s and 911s. I believe he raced vintage 356s. ALMOST bought a mini off him in 2005 when I was living in Houston. Beautiful little Morris 850 that I SHOULD have bought, but didn't. He was always a great resource for most local scenes.

Just noticed this thread--hope it's not too late to jump in.  I lived in Houston for 38 years, until January 2013, when I escaped to Arkansas.  The suggestion that you join HMMS is a good one (Houston MINI Motoring Society).  Mostly new MINIs, but there are some classics, too.  There's a Facebook group for HMMS, using the spelled-out name.  There's also a Facebook group for classics--Classic Minis of Houston.  I left town before I got my classic, so I can't say I know all of these guys, but I do know some.

Biggest thing if you're going to buy a car once you move to Houston--and I can't stress this enough--be sure it wasn't flooded.  Hundreds of thousands of cars drowned in Hurricane Harvey last fall, and that's not the only flood event the town has seen, by far.  Same goes for whereever you move--nothing worse than losing a house or apartment.  Houston floods regularly!

As for driving daily, I wouldn't.  Even if you have a reliable car, unless you're only talking a couple of miles each way, sooner or later you're going to get hit.  And that's not a good thing.  Not to mention that traffic is unmentionably bad!  You can register the car as a classic if it's over 25 years old, and (unless the law has changed), you won't need to get the annual state inspections or plates.  If it's not registered as a classic, you WILL need annual state inspections and smog checks, but the smog standard is based on the year of the car.  We had a classic Porsche for all of the 38 years we lived in Houston, and never had a problem.  We didn't get classic plates until around 2001 or so.  The state safety inspection is nothing exciting--lights, brake test (drive to a certain speed and slam on the brakes), wipers, horn, etc--stuff you should have anyway.  Not even that is checked if it's registered as a classic.

I'd be happy to send along some names of good people in either club if you'd like, assuming there's a PM feature in this forum.

There are a bunch of REALLY cool folk here, they are just won’t get involved in this public forum.

Depends on the Ringgit vs Dollar value. Mini’s are expensive in the US. Maybe worth way less in Asia. Maybe not, but that’s how I would decide. There are a few folk on this board who can help you ship or determine what is best course of action. The bodoh troll tolol is of no help
