Can't remember which floor we lived but it was the side facing the parking garage, not the Holiday Inn.

As "Chris Morgan" I did radio and TV there for four years and co-hosted "Motorsport Atlantic" with Dr Jeff Wright for a couple of years. Jeff drove a white formula V. Max Wickens was the PR guy for British Leyland and we became friends thru AMP. When the Triumph TR7 was launched he arranged for me to have one for about a week and i did the first press report in Canada on the brown one he lent me.

Our Tartan is the red & green one. The red & blue tartan was used in the Mini Sidewalk which was released in England for domestic use. The Mini Tartan was JDM only and I believe it is very similar to the Mini Balmoral tartan fabric, although I have never seen a Balmoral. This is a picture of it here.

Working as a DJ. That certainly explains your great wit Minerva ! Must have been fun times. I think I know of the service station on the Bedford Highway. That’s where I saw my first Lotus, if it’s the same garage ( sounds like it by your description ). My Grabdparents lived in Lower Sackville, so I used to travel the Bedford route into Halifax quite often. It was a white Europa, and I was captivated. I stopped to look at it ( of course...British cars have always been my favourites ) and I must have spent at least a half-hour just looking ( down ) at this amazing, beautiful car. I never touched it of course, but I looked at it from every possible angle. This was in 1980. The memory is still vivid. Europas are one of my three favourite cars...the other two are Dino 246 gt’s and Minis. I used to go up to Halifax British Motors often. Ogling the Minis, MG Midgets , MGB’s and the occasional E-type. I’m curious if your mini has the blue/green Tartan interior? Not very many around ( I think ) and very nice. If so, is there two variations of the Tartan ? One with blue as the dominant colour and the other with Green as the dominant colour ? In any event I must see if I can view some pictures of your mini. I am not any closer to knowing how to post pictures but I WILL figure it out so I can post a few of my mini. I’ve been ticking off the days while I await the arrival of mine. To be opptomistic ( sp ? ) I think it may help the winter pass quickly. No logic to that...but it’s my story and I’m sticking to it :-)

I used to work at CJCH in the early and mid 1970s, down on Robie St, Lived in Scotia Towers and then on Convoy Place in the towers. The Mini was likely Carl Ferguson's. He was the hot Mini and Brit mechanic. Used to work at Halifax British Motors ( where i bought our new 1976 Mini) and then he moved to a service station on the way out the Bedford Highway just past the Clayton park turnoff. He used to work on my E Type. His Mini was a rocket. I was on the 4 lane between Truro and Halifax one day, doing about 90mph and i looked in my mirror at a set of headlights fast approaching. Carl blew by in that Mini doing about 120 mph. Dave Van Skoik owned a Mini that our Radio station used to sponsor. Raced it at AMP, where I was a founding member-former AMCRA member and track announcer there.

Thank you Minerva. Those links are worth checking out. I think quite a few BATANS members come over to PEI for the British Car Show in Cymbria ( near Rustico PEI ). So it might also be fun to participate in one of BATANS get together. Perhaps make some connections that way. I spent a lot of time in the Halifax area during the 70’s and 80’s as my late Mothers extended family ( my Grandparent, Aunts, Uncles etc ) live there. I used to see Minis every time I was there. I did watch one gymkahna there too. There was one beige Cooper S at this particular meet. I remember being drawn to the Mini and asking if it was a Cooper S ( it was ) and probably pestering them with my numerous questions. There were a few VW Rabbits and several Honda Civic cvcc’s etc, but the one that I stayed close to and likely drooled over was this beige Cooper S. The Mini fever had me even back then ! Thanks for the suggestions Minerva. I will check them out. I also have hopes of getting a cars and coffee group together. I think it would be good fun on a Saturday or Sunday morning. I hope that once a group starts, even if it’s small, then word will spread and it will grow. Do you live in Scotland now ? And do you have a Mini ? Thanks. Darren.

"You'd be correct. There's a 67? Cooper or Cooper S over there. I think it's OEW or perhaps beige. Some years back I tried to track down every car in NB, NS and PEI every way I could, and start up a Maritime Mini Club, but it flopped. Just not enough owners and very little interest within the people that DID own cars. If I had to guess, there are a few more nowadays with importing being our only source of cars. I only know of a few survivor cars.... Maybe 30? in the Maritimes? Maybe more, maybe less. They are certainly very rare. Shame. Once a very common sight on the roads here. It's *WHY* I wanted one growing up. Who wouldn't love a wee little car that was FWD, 10" tires and could pass an F-150 going uphill in a snowstorm" Maybe these folks can help you locate further minis? The sports car club used to holds lots of events including rallies and gymkhanas in the greater Halifax area when I lived there in the 1970s. //www.ascc.ca/ You might also want to contact these folks.. .//www.britishmotoringfestival.com/ or //www.batans.ca/ These folks also...they have a BMA on PEI!! //www.maritimeclassiccars.com/disp_clubs_list.php

Thanks bluebox, I’ll take you up on those photos soon. That’s quite a machine you’ve got. Have you seen the Jay Leno’s Garage episode where the there is a Newzealand Mini with the BMW head ? Very interesting. There are a couple of companies offering a kit to do that build now. I would guess that the Midget donor was an early one with the A series rather than the Triumph engined Midgets of the last 6 or 7 final years ? I’m just counting off the days now...patiently waiting for my Mini to arrive. I’ve a small list of bits that I want/need for my car but with several months of waiting for good, salt free roads ahead I’m in no real hurry. I figure I may save a few dollars by checking as many suppliers as possible in the meantime. Cheers bluebox, Darren.

PS- I owned a ‘69 Midget and it was lots of fun,but I still enjoy Minis more. If Minis didn’t exist my next choice would be to buy anouther Midget/Sprite.

Well that’s excellent that you plan to make it to the PEI British Car Show bluebox ! I look forward to meeting you and seeing your Mini. Is it blue, by chance ? Mine is a silver 89 Mayfair ( excellent condition) with the basic three gauge centre binnacle. I’ll darn well have some pictures up before then, so you can find me. There are some really unusual Marques there. Nice beaches only a few miles away, and several nice restaurants handy too. I can show you and any travelling companions around too, if you like. I’m about 2 Weeks away from having my Mini delivered, and I’m pretty excited to finally achieve the goal of having a fine classic mini. I think classic Minis are like artists blank canvas ; so many subtle ways ( and some not so subtle ) to create a unique car that sold over 5 million copies. I have some items in mind that I plan to do to mine, mostly cosmetic at least for Year one. Either 2.5 or 5 litres of waxoyl will be going on first thing in the spring. I’m going to by a good kit so that I can reach all the underchassis and sills from the rocker lip to everything below, as well as most of the firewall etc. I think it is likely one of the best investments a classic Mini owner can buy. Just my 2 cents of course! Cheers bluebox ?? Derwood.

Hi bluebox ??. It sounds like you have a terrific summer planned. I just hunted for the dates for the annual British Car Show at Cymbria PEI, but it is still to be announced. Bummer, but I will keep an eye open and check regularly. I certainly plain to be a participant this year ( YEAH ! ), so I will pass the dates on to you when they are posted. Are you going to take in Targa Newfoundland ? That is one awesome event, as you likely know. Usually one or two classic Minis competing too ?? ! I have only seen it on TV, but I have visited Newfoundland and know how attractive a trip there can be. I toured the west coast of NFLD in 1987 in my TR7 roadster. My ex girlfriend and I had a great time. We didn’t even argue much ! Watkins Glen sounds like an awesome circuit to take in the action too. I hope you will post some pictures. Cheers bluebox, Derwood.????

I will be touring around Newfoundland from June till the civic long weekend. Then meandering home to Ontario to pick up my mini and go to Watkins Glen and Bronte British car show. Cheers.

Hi specialist. Thanks very much for the info. I’ve used photobucket once before ( but recently ) so that
really narrows things down for me, and I know where to start net searching for these apps. Too cool for
school ! Awesome.... ??

Whee, thanks for your affirming of oil change intervals. I’m going with 1500km too. Because she’s worth
it. Very much so. Lifeblood of the motor and trans.

And thanks for the picture info. I finally found the green box....getting close to posting some pictures.

Thanks friends. I’m starting to get excited about the Mini....
        Darren.

PS- is there a PM ( private message ) system on this forum ? And where on the left hand side is the button

Oil changes - these days mine are usually time versus mileage based. Mileage I wouldn't go more than 1,500 miles.
No PM system
See top left of attached screenshot to see the green button. Make sure you resize the pictures before drag and dropping - that is normally the problem.

Hi onetim, and thanks for trying to help me upload pictures??. I’ve downloaded about a half/dozen new
to me apps and still can’t figure out how to post pictures here ( yet ! ). You mention about a photo drag and
drop in the top left...where or what the symbol for that is I don’t know. Doh ! Oh well, I’ll keep trying until
i figure it out. I’ve managed to convert some iPhoto’s to jpeg, but can’t get them to load onto a post either.
Big thank you for congratulating me though ??. Much appreciated !
tmsmith, you are right, there are VERY FEW classic Minis in this area. I only know of one on PEI...a mk3
of about 1979 vintage that seems to only leave the garage a few times each summer. If I ever get a chance to
talk to him I’ll invite him to join us. I haven’t seen the Cooper here yet. As far as I know there is only the 79
Mini I just mentioned , plus mine soon ?? ! As Mike mentioned , at one time they were seen quite often, especially in larger areas like Halifax, Nova Scotia. Back in the ‘70’s there were likely hundreds of Minis in the
greater Halifax area. My late Grandparents lived there, and I used to see several every day. I suspect that
Mikes estimate of about 30 Minis being in the maritimes is a good estimate. Without going to a British car
show I might see 1 or 2 Minis each summer...I’m afraid that rust has gotten most of the original Canadian
Minis. Rotten little steel munchers. They say that on a really quiet night you can hear the rust munching on
the metal..... ??
I like your end phrase Mike : 30 seconds in a Mini is more therapeutic than 3 sessions @ the shrink.
Very true imho ! ?? !

Well , I guess that’s all for now, but I’m going to find out how to post picture eventually. Mike, I am able
to see photos of your car just by clicking on your name. Very nice. I do hope we can meet up some time
in the coming summer. Also , I don’t think Charlottetown has a cars and coffee thing going on, so I might
try to see if I can get that happening in the Summer. And speaking of summer, PEI does host a large British
ar show every summer near Cavendish, so I’ll definetly be taking part in that.
