Al, we won't be bringing the Cub or even the the MINI. Since we'll have time, we're going to move around the state for a few weeks (with 3 dogs). Besides, when I changed oil on the Cub last year, the magnetic plug was VERY fuzzy, plus other bits in the oil.
As soon as I get the ol' Willys wagon running (dropping in a 4.3L V6/5 spd) I'll get to the Cub. Planning on bringing the Clubby Estate to N.Y.(on the dolly, of course).

My tow bar is a UK design.  It doesn't bolt to the subframe.  It uses 2 steering rack hardened U bolts which go to the lower arms. They slide when you turn.  No backing up though.   Fast to install, 4 nuts and never let me down.  This won't work on minis with the automatic trans. It's a clearance issue.

+1 in my opinion. RedRiley's solution to throw the whole mess in a pickup truck adds the necessity of a pickup truck. Going from 4 - 10,12 or 13" wheels to 2 larger wheels on the dolly plus 4 - 8" wheels on the rear seems counter-productive. A trailer just makes more sense and a lot less effort and expense (especially if you add in the pickup) to me.

The wheels are made to run at high speeds so I wouldn't worry about those. The biggest bonus I could see would be that you could throw the whole mess into a pickup truck. Plus, it would save wear on the rear tires.

I wonder how well it would work to use a tow dolly in the front and a set of speed dollies in the rear?

Good advice. I had that issue with a lowered Mini on my dolly when it had the ramps attached and i used 2"x12" raisers under the wheels and it was fine on flat roads but when going into steep driveways and different elevations the ramps would want to hit the floors. I removed the ramps and now have the same detachable ramp set up as the ACME and my swivel deck is 11 inches off the ground (quite high) but i have no more issues.
I cannot see how the ACME dolly with the same set up and a lower profile due to it's smaller tires without a swivel deck could possibly hit the floors but like you said do your homework before buying.

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

I would suggest anyone looking at the ACME tow dolly to do some research/due diligence.  Friends here in San Diego (with a 10" wheel Mini) were very interested in the ACME.  They ended up calling the factory, who told them their car needed at least 4.5" ground clearance (their Mini has 3.5") or the sills would get hung up on the dolly.  Apparently even 12" wheel cars are iffy.  The factory wouldn't give any names of anyone in San Diego who owned one so they were unable to personally look at one.  If anyone actually has experience with one, please post something here.

I'm impressed with the Acme dolly (hyd. disc brakes) video. I could not make it for that price. My only concern is the lack of a swivel deck or pan. My early attempts didn't swivel, and I was worried about the stress turning corners was putting on the Mini. I never experienced a failure, however. Without the swivel, I still think that the front wheels need to roll slightly when turning  to avoid the stress on the Mini suspension/subframe. Difficult to do when the straps prevent that movement. I would like to hear from those who have used the Acme.  Maybe someone will bring one to Cocoa Beach...?  See you there!
I have used the fixed deck tow dollies and currently have a swivel deck one. When towing with a dolly i tend to take wider more gradual turns so not to put stress on the straps as they do loosen up especially when it rains. That being said if you watch the Acme video you can see that the cars wheels want to move around when doing the tight turns. I will say the fixed deck dolly was easier to back up compared with the one i currently have i can do about 15 feet max on a good day before it all goes haywire, i just try not to get in a situation where i need to back up period.
There is/was an expensive dolly made with a fixed deck where the wheels actually turn and create no stress on the towed car, you of course have to lock the wheels when towing empty.

$59.00 ?., how cheap is that ?, and it’s Harbor Freight, Amy Stroble works for HF in Illinois, maybe she can get me one with her employee discount and l would only have to pay $49.00 and she could deliver it to me @ the Mini fun fest in Coco Beach FL

How cheap am l ?

I thought about making a tow bar then saw them on sale at Harbor Freight for $59 regulary around $69 i think so i came to the conclusion it was not worth the effort of making one.
I have used it quite a few times and it works fine but as with all Mini tow bars you need to make the two front sub frame bolts solidly attached to each other with some flat bar to offset the stress loads when turning.

I've had great success with my tow bar which I made myself.  It's basically angle iron and I'll text anyone a pic of it if they can share it here.  I've towed minis from Virginia to NY no problem.

If someone would like to share the pic here, please put your cell # in this thread or pm me and I'll send it to you.

That's a decent price for the disc braked one.
