Thanks for all the great information. I think I’m going to use the bolts off of the 850. I have them and they are cheap haha. I sure am learning a lot on this project thanks to everyone here!

Yes Kevin,
The bolts have faithfully done their job...for almost 45 years...and will be replaced with either ARP or Mini Spares items (I had asked GR). We used Caterpillar tractor bolts on the mains in the 1380 build, stronger than other items available. Not sure yet what I will use on the mains for this 1185cc build.
12G202 head on the 1098, which GR likes for mods, will go on the parts shelf.
One new thing for me (all my earlier Minis were 1976 or later), I discovered on removal of the alternator & its 'plate type' rear mounting bracket...pre-A+ bracket as used on Minis coming to Canada from England mid-70s on will not do the job...bolt locations in the 1098 block are too low.

Hi Rick,
50 year old Oz 1098 head bolts have a habit of going BANG! where they screw into the block. I refuse to re-use them.
Nothing wrong with using old 850 studs, they are real steel, unlike the cheapo Chinese/Indian ones that suppliers sell singly. They go BANG! when new.

Another post from Specialist with no factual basis whatsoever.
I would suggest that you find the Head bolts as used on Australian minis. They are probably no better or worse than other stock fasteners, but boy do they mess with the folks who MUST HAVE ARP....

If you take parts from your 850cc and put it in your 1098, your 1098 may become slow.
Buying the parts from minimania is the best option.

Let me know if you can't find the head studs or any other hardware as I can supply. Over 40 years of playing with these engines. There are at least four different types of head studs as well as several different lengths .

As is often the case there is no info in your profile. Just wondering where you are located. I have been taking mini and Sprite engines and trannys apart so long it's no longer funny. There was a time when I'd use labeled baby food jars with lids and keep all the hardware for different areas together. The removing from jars cleaning, wire brushing and cleaning the jar got old. Much later I went to zip loc bags, just as big a mess and the bags fall apart around the wrong cleaners. I now put it all in my rock polisher run it a couple of days rinse, dry, wire brush and spray with WD 40. I also run my rock polisher with any hardware I find around the shop and once done it goes into half gallon plastic jugs by size , thread pitch, length and head type. It has gotten out of hand with 25 or more jugs of hardware done and several of the large coffee cans I haven't looked at yet from a retired mini nut.
Seems to me someone here on the board at one time was working on a list of all hardware required for a engine build.
Got to love the late Jap spec cars they also have metric hardware. Had to drop by and pick up a couple of M 6 x 1 x 20 bolts to mount a ECU.
OT for the one who started the thread. Many years ago we bought a 57 Piper Tri Pacer with 0320. I rebuilt the engine in my basement work shop. Steve (CTR)

I was thinking about sourcing stuff elsewhere. I’m an aircraft mechanic so I can, most likely, find most of the nuts and bolts I need. I did get new main cap bolts thanks to a fellow minimania member. I must say there are most excellent people here!

I'm pretty sure most of its common.. I did pretty much the same and didn't need much new stuff. Its a case of suck it and see.
I would probably be strongly tempted by new main/big end bearing fasteners but for the rest of it......
Additionally i would be looking at a specialty fastener shop (of which i have one just down the road rather than a Mini specialist for such stuff. When we built the last engine for my Daughter's car the local engine shop was able to source stuff such as bearings, clutch and so on at a much better price from his generic suppliers than I could from any of the Mini shops..
Cheers, Ian

Ok, so I back with another stupid question. I got the block and head back from the machine shop. I’m constantly looking through the bins and piles of stuff I got with this car and it looks like a LOT of the engine hardware is missing. I found 2 head studs. I have been trying to find new hardware on the top mini parts suppliers’ websites, but it’s proving difficult. I found one head stud set on minimania for $250 ish. There has to be a cheaper option. I have 2 complete 850cc engines I could rob hardware off of. Is any of the hardware from an 850 even compatible with a 1098?
Thank you you in advance.
