Don't forget this body number IS NOT the VIN.
If you want to be pedantic ..older Minis DON'T HAVE VINs .. they hadn't been invented.

Our rego authorities accept the body number on my car as the VIN; as the number is unique and was attached (more or less permanently) to the car by the manufacturer during its production... i.e. its an individual vehicle identification number...

But you are correct in that the records may not contain your body number.... but most do.  The records are handwritten (hence do contain errors) and became much less comprehensive before disappearing later in Mini's life..

If you give BMIHT a body number they will be able to find the rest of the info....

Cheers, Ian

Car engines make CO2 and trees absorb CO2. By running your engine you're feeding a tree and helping the environment.

If you have the original bonnet slam panel it will have a welded plate stamped with the body number slightly to the left (as you look at it of the bonnet latch).... which should also be shown on your Heritage Certificate.

Having a stamped number may assist with convincing the authorities of the validity of the certificate...

Cheers, Ian

Just get a set of stamps and stamp them into the floor or cross member and age them. I have seen this done when DMV requires 2 sources of a vin number and any UK Mini built before 1980 AFAIK only had one from the factory.

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

Like BC says. If you know the proper VIN, just attach a new plate with the right numbers and no one's the wiser.

The Mini is a 1966 Cooper S.  We have the SCCA vehicle race logbook with VIN but the state of Ohio will not accept the logbook with the VIN as a document of record.  With old SCCA race cars such as this Mini, the original title was lost early in its history of owner transfers. When a race car is sold to a new owner, SCCA recognizes the race logbook with VIN as a document of record and registration.

The metal surround around the radiator area had been modified and the original VIN tag was not provided.

British Leyland Historical has verified the VIN with colors of the Mini but again the state of Ohio refused to accept the VIN.

Thanks, Ryan Williams.

On later cars, the VIN was stamped into the gutter above the right hand bonnet hinge. Of course it may be obscured with paint or lost to a rust or damage repair. As Bill says, early cars did not have the number there.

Nothing on earlies.

The Rover models (maybe others) have it stamped in the recess for the bonnet near the right hinge.

Question for Mini historians about if the VIN number of a Mini is stamped somewhere on the unibody besides the riveted stamped VIN tag?

Trying to help a friend obtain a title for an old SCCA race Mini which was transferred numerous ownerships via the SCCA vehicle race logbook with registered serial number.  Very common for old SCCA race cars to be sold without a title as the SCCA logbook is recognized as a document of ownership with VIN number.

Thank you in advance, Ryan Williams.
