Sure, but yours almost certainly is not a bog-standard, off the line, never rebuilt 998.
Even so, a bog-standard 998 or 850 can be enough. Especially if one knows how to make it perform without thrashing it. Even my 850 with the knock worked fine so long as I stayed away from floating valve territory.

Having owned an 850 for many years and driven 850s and 998s back to back I would strongly disagree with this.....  The 998 puts out at least 25% more power than the 850...  When you don't have much, a little extra goes a long way...

This IS significant and will be immediately noticeable the first time you come to a small hill.  A rise that will reduce the 850 to screaming second gear grind will almost pass unnoticed in a 998 at city speeds...

I think you need to drive both before making a decision..

Cheers, Ian
What I meant was not big relative to 1300 cc engines... and the part highlighted in red above is my qualifier for this opinion.
25% of 34hp is 8.5hp = 42.5 for a 998. A 1300 producing 65 to 83 is a big difference.
(BTW I have owned 850, 998, 1100 and 1275 Minis. I don't recall ever having to downshift the 850 to 2nd gear to climb a hill. The 850 had the valves float on me somewhere around 78mph on the 4-lane, resulting in a persistent knock. That's why the 1100 eventually got put in.)

What I meant by my qualifier is that if the car is for gentle Sunday touring or shows or just to "have", the engine size may not be significant, unless of course it evolved into a period-correct full-on restoration, in which case the 850 might be a necessity. If, on the other hand, it evolved into a competition car, then neither the 850 or the 998 would likely be strong enough.

THANKs for explaining that! He shows me cars quite often, we are both Keen enthusiasts so we often talk about cars. He also showed me several MGB GTs (we have a roadster) and a Ford Escor recently. I can’t  afford all the ones he shows me but he mentioned that the green one was well priced considering it was restored.
MAybe he wants me to encourage him to buy a new car, I don’t imagine he thinks i will.
It’s his birthday on Christmas Day and he’ll be 30 so i wanted something special!

If you really love him, you'd buy them both! ( Just joking!)
You said he showed you the green one? If he's been looking for a while and got up the nerve to show it to you, he may be wanting that one. The difference between the 850cc engine and the 1000cc engine is not big and may not be significant for the use it will get. Most Minis have a suspension that uses rubber 'cones' (they look more like rubber balls) for springs. For a while, some Mini models were built with a hydraulic suspension where the front wheel on each side was connected by tubing to the rear wheel on the same side. When the front wheel hits a bump, the hydraulics force the rear wheel to compensate, to try and keep the car more or less level. The system is called 'hydrolastic' because it is pressurized to provide a softer, more compliant ride. If the pressure is lower than spec on one side, the car will be lower on that side. If the car is equally low on both sides, either the suspension pressure was lowered or it may have an adjustable  rubber cone suspension and the car was set low.
THANKs

If your husband told you about the Green One, then I would go with that one as he has checked it out by looking. Ask about the suspension. It seems to be sitting a little low. All the work has been done. Nice Mark 3.

Find the local mini community and talk to those folks.

I think it makes sense to only buy a car after an impartial person with knowledge of these cars has a look for you.

if you're in any mountains, go for the one with the larger engine, and there is also a 1100 engine and a 1300.   Not sure if you have tax issues with larger engines, =greater road taxes.??

I assume you or your husband or a local mechanic takes care of your mgb.  So the mini is very similar with it's lucas electrics and A series engine.

Nice surprise to give someone.

I'm guessing they are both badged Authi

The green one looks like a hydrolastic car looks when suspension is collapsed

good morning.. prices seems a bit high for both of them.. BUT they are both in spain..  might try to look for an AUTHI mini . as they were actually made in spain.. sure they have hugh Authi Club there..  I would suggest you buy one off www.ebay.co.uk or www.carandclassic.co.uk   but the VAT and import due would KILL you..  Milan Uncios is great website there..  later b c

wow, that is a tough one

some guys would rather pick their own, whereas some would rather be surprised by what their loved on has picked for them

the price difference is not so much, and the smaller engined one does look very nice - there are too few photos of the 1000 to judge and when that is the case it is often wise to assume they had a reason to not reveal under the hood!

However, a larger engine is very nice to have on the open road...

A difficult decision.  My advice is to take him with you to review both of them and decide together.

Hello,

Thanks in advance!
