I am not a fan of a re-vin old or new.  I would think the value would be a lot less for a wagon titled as a sedan and in the future trying to sell the car could become an issue.

It depends on what the title says. Some states just use 2dr on a title some use pick/van/station wagon etc.
If a buyer is buying it and titling it in the same State it is not as big of an issue as someone buying and titling it in a different State as most States require a visual inspection and that is when the problems would start.

It sounds as if somebody either grafted a sedan front clip on without transferring the pickup/van/estate VIN, or "converted" a sedan to a LWB version by doing the same thing.

Any way of finding a hidden true VIN, e.g the one stamped into the cowl gutter on later versions?

ideally, there would be a way to check that VIN number in its home country to confirm there's no record of theft

Not sure how to do that, though.

Problem solved. Poor communication on the seller's end. Life is good!
