I have an 87 Japanese Mini, probably very similar to yours, except mine is manual transmission. I've had similar stalling issues, and they've almost always turned out to be related to the carburetor. Hopefully, a minor adjustment will take care of your stalling issue. Happy motoring!

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

My 1360 Cooper S has taken to wanting a little choke for a while in the mornings. It seems like 998 autos are finding their way into the country. I have completed one swap and am working on two more now. One a 998 and one a 1275 both Jap spec autos. Steve (CTR)

30 to 40 deg. F. is cold enough to affect an engine due for a tune-up. Before you take it in, check the dashpot oil.

Does your car have a carburetor or fuel injection?
Usually a stall followed by a reasonably easy restart and reasonable drivability are a result of (1) diver error - not getting the clutch fully disengaged; or (2) the engine telling you it is getting due for a tune-up. Colder weather also can affect performance.
If it has a carb, check to see there is oil in the dashpot damper - the black knob on top of the carb. The innermost cylinder should be about 3/4 full of oil, or just about full with the damper piston re-inserted.
Next, check that the air filter is clean and properly installed.
Next, check that all the hoses and tubes are properly connected to the carb.
Next, check the spark plugs are clean and properly gapped (the gaps should be OK).

Hello!
I have a 1992 Japanese Mini. I was at the stoplight and the engine just cutout and the red dashlight was lit. I was able to get it started again and get home and it had already been driven earlier. Is this a fuel problem? Electrical?
