when buying alcohol at the drug store for this be sure you are buying Ethyl alcohol (grain alcohol) because the more common isopropyl alcohol smells bad (when sprayed as an aerosol either directly on the windshield or when mixed with the washer fluid and vaporized by the washer nozzles), the odor comes in through the heater vent by the fan, and in worst cases it can chemically attack resin parts on the outside of your vehicle, staining them

As AL says, windshield washer fluid has maybe 35% to 40% (can't be bothered to go to the garage and actually check). If one does not use their windshield squirters regularly, the alcohol evaporates from the nozzles and the remainder freezes up. Really cold days are also really dry days, so evaporation of the alcohol can occur while driving.

Wouldn't baklava tend to melt under a toque and run down into your ears?
A 'Balaclava" might be better, though they are for wimps.

Malcolm

Stay in Florida, be content to have hurricanes to deal with, leave the ice and snow to us

No, the alcohol content in the washer fluid is just enough to keep it from freezing

You need a higher concentrate to "bust " the ice

PS; congrats on the sale of my former SPi

Don't they sell a winter washer fluid that does not freeze? Maybe folks put alcohol in the washer fluid and have the same results.

Ah thats the proper spelling. For the past 30 years, my trip to work is only a half mile or so, I have made the trip on more than a few occasions with my head and upper torso hanging out the window due to frost/ice, quite bracing on a really cold morning.  I really like remote starters, and the alcohol tip.

This is a free winter driving tip for my Northern friends who get up in the morning only to find their windshield covered in a 1/4 inch of ice

Of course your kid has taken your handy 36 inch long warrior ice scraper and you lost your gloves and toque & are outside in a howling blizzard, fear not,

Just go to a local Dollar store and buy 2 bottles of rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle, cost $1.00 each (one for the glove box and one back up)

This is a pre mixed solution of 70% Ethyl Alcohol and water in a simple bottle , make your own if you wish, l made mine up in a 24 ounce bottle for my truck, sprays further ,no climbing up on the fender

Believe it or not, this juice will dissolve the ice immediately, no scraping just use your windshield wipers to clear off the mush

So the next time you go out to your car and find ice all over your windshield (windscreen) and you have no Ice Buster, just think of me & smile

Big AL

NB; Toque, an unique knitted head cover given to us by the French for taking Quebec off their hands LOL, tres bien !
