Although a bit of an exaggeration, I look at visible rust in a Mini as the top of an iceberg showing out of the sea. You're only seeing 10% of it. That doesn't mean one can't resurrect a rusty Mini. It does mean you'll be doing more work than you expected.

Around 69 -70 austin and morris combined to form BL or British Leyland. Management was into major cost cutting. John Cooper no longer got his royalty payment for the mini cooper, so the cooper name was dropped. They tried to gin up sales with the 1275GT, but people wanted the mini cooper.

I can't remember all the details without going back into my reference library.

That year was just a year, nothing good or bad. What is more important is that the rust worm has taken hold. Any time you have rust up into the windshield scuttle panel and wing , you got rust in the door hinge post as shown in the photo where the A panel, door corner and outer & inner sill meet. It's nothing but rust there. I can see it from New York and my eye sight isn't what it used to be.

Now you are showing me rust in the rear valance panel which mean rust in the boot floor and the that whole area where the boot lid closes.
There are three pieces of sheet metal that lays upon each other there , which collects water & dirt at that seam. Heck the mini starts rusting at the factory.

Look at the rear bulk head where the rear subframe attaches to the body. That will be major disassembly. While there, look at the rear sub frame.  Also bottom of doors. All doable , all panels available. just try to keep the mini on all fours. My take is, if you love the mini then do it otherwise you'll be doing alot of work to something you just like. Good luck.
Thanks for the reply

What are your thoughts on the 1970 model?
Good year? bad year?
It appears to be a Mk3?
If I put a bunch of time and money into it I would like it to be orate something when I'm done.
Does a nicely redone 70 have some value to it?

What makes you say the door hinge posts need replacing?

Thanks

Hello mini people

Im new here and new to mini in general.

I am looking at a 1970 for a project. It currently runs and drives.
The owner says its a RHD import

I have seen a bunch of really good looking pictures. The price is pretty cheap.
Has a little rust on it. He says the floors have surface rust but not soft or rotted through.

Can you guys tell me anything specific about the 1970 that I should look for or be aware of.
He says its a 1000cc

Was the 1970 a desirable year? A crappy year?

I am an engineer and car enthusiast who has built a few race cars. I have a proper shop and some free cash for the project.
Im more interested in hearing thoughts and opinions on what the 1970 was all about

The car will need a few small panel replacements sections that I can see. I am an experienced welder.

Here are a few pics of the worst parts of the car. The rest looks pretty nice

I would prefer not to post complete pictures yet as the car is not mine officially

It does appear to be a MK3 with hidden door hinges
