I know this is now past news but I just bought a car ('79 MGB) from the NE (Delaware), paid an MG mechanic to take possession and drive it to DC. My wife and I flew to DC from Florida, drove the car 20 minutes to Lorton, VA, and boarded the Auto Train. It dumped us off in Orlando, FL, said "HI" to Mickey, and drove and hour to Tampa. End of trip! Enjoyable. Stress-free. And didn't put any miles on the new car.

When the person shipping it puts duct tape on paint I don't mess with it. I take photos at the point of origin and let the person receiving the vehicle take the tape off. That way if it pulls the paint, then it had nothing to do with me. I just tie the cars down and transport them. Normally I have the person I pick it up from drive it onto the trailer.

Hugh, removing tape from anything, like the shipping labels on amazon boxes is easy and quick with a hair dryer. Soften the adhesive and bob's your aunt.

All l had heard it was to be in Kingston and of course l just assumed it would be back at that same Quality Inn, however now that l know it’s not then New Paltz NY is real close to Kingston NY like about 40miles south on I-87 I stayed there overnite last year when hauling my moke back from Connecticut, small potatoes area but lots of open roads and of course quite close to the Catskill mountains which is very scenic So let me start amassing my empty pop / beer bottles and see what l can scrape up for the trip, only Six months away

The cardboard sounds like a good idea, as long as the duct tape doesn't ruin your paint. I have had a couple of clients put cardboard over the windshield but I didn't necessarily like how they taped it down. Anyway, I've never had a cracked or broken window on the hundreds of cars I've moved. Not saying that it won't happen or that it can't happen, but my thoughts are the close proximity of the vehicle on the trailer to the rear of my SUV pretty much reduces the chance of debris coming across the top and hitting the windshield. I think if you put the SUV and trailer in a wind tunnel, you'd see the Mini wouldn't be in the windstream. At any rate, an ounce of prevention goes a long way. Speaking of which, in Biggles post he said he tied down the rear frame? Not a good idea IMHO. The rear subframe is easily bent if you ratchet it down too hard. One should always tie down the wheels on most vehicles. That said, my latest haul was a Massey Ferguson tractor and I strapped it down by it's heavy frame instead of the wheels.

I was under the impression the MME in 2018 is in New Paltz, not Kingston Big Al.

When I tow or trailer a mini, I like to duct tape a few sheets of heavy cardboard to the forward facing glass. Usually the front screen.  Just sharing. Cheaper to add the cardboard than have to buy new glass and gasket.

We left NY on Dec 7, a day before crappy hit. We stoped in SC just south of Charolette on the first night. The next day we drove though rain or mist for half the day but arrived in Venice, FL about 5:30 pm. The car rode great. And the trailer was easy to pull. No problem with bumps or road debris on the open trailer

I have a picture leavin N.Y. and arriving in FL. But haven’t figured out posting yet. I do not have a host site that I load pics on to. Thanks for asking Blaine

Congratulations, glad to hear it all worked out

From what you say, you rented an open trailer, how did the Mini come thru it all, did you hit any storms &/or crappy breather ? Just curious

Then, if you bought, just sell the trailer in Florida
I second Spit ‘s suggestion, and to add,  rent a trailer from Uhaul, penske from NY and return it to Uhaul Branch in Florida, They charge a day fee for the trailer and charge extra $150 if returned to another out of state branch.

or try Uship.com
Day late and a dollar short as usual......................................

FYI update to old post I finally made the move. I packed up the final items in a 16 ft Penskie truck and loaded my 76 mini 1000 (Biggles) onto a a trailer and made the drive to Florida from Hudson Valley, NY.

We sold the NY house and are now permanently in The Sarasota co area in FL. In December this year.

This week I got insurance from Haggerty and visited the tax assessor so office to register Biggles here in FL. Someone had already taken the BIGGLES specialty plate, so I made a slight variation making mine B1GGLES.

Some notes on transporting;

The Penskie trailer was a close fit on the width of the ramps. Biggles was within an inch of coming off the inside of the ramps. I had to have a spotter guide me up. And back down again in FL. I was able to snug the tires in the wheel straps, and successfully chained the rear frame from shifting side to side.

The trip was perfect. And Biggles rode to his new home with no problems. Lots of smiles and thumbs up along the way from other drivers. That's the part I love the most!

Now I am looking forward to new adventures in FL

The Auto Train sounds fun

And a great adventure when I am retired. Couple of years to go. I,m not sure about the Orange Co Ny to Washington leg and Sanford to Venice on the other end. I would still need to trailer I think

Thanks for the advice Blaine

It is a very slow move. I am snow birding right now, but plan to leave NY permanently within three years. That's the time frame for moving my mini down to Venice, FL Thanks any how

Amtrak only has the Autotrain between Washington and Florida. Nothing east-west and major freight railroads do not do individual shipments. Your best bet is to plan the trip, using Dr Mini or a private truck carrier as Big AL suggests. Or talk another Mini-owning fanatic to drive it back for you.  Who's up for a road trip?
